First, I got an oil leak, but that isn't a big deal. I can fix that, its on the turbo return line.

Here is what all was done. Pulled the head off. Had a valve job done and the works, shaved . 010, 60# springs and all. Put a . 020 marine gasket back on, new 370 injectors, #10 fuel plate, 4K GSK kit, new, filters, hoses,

Well, got it primed up and it fired off. Oil pressure is good. It idles too low, need some instructions on how to idle it up please.

At 2,000 rpms, the thing just goes haywire, like it sputters really bad, not even drivable. No signs of fuel leaks.

I put in the new governor springs. The nut was . 012 before I replaced them. Put in the new base retainer with no shims, put the nut back on at . 012 like it had been before I taken the nut off. The new #10 plate is in the stock position.

Can anyone tell me where to start at with the info I told you??

Appreciate any help,

JD

P. S. I know the timing needs to be bumped up, I haven't done it yet. Hope that is really the problem.

i know timing should help out some, also i have heard that the small delivery valves need upgraded because witht he small ones there is a noticable stumble, not sure if it is as bad as you says yours is but that is what i know. hope it helps

Stupid me, I know its the timing. I thought it out while going to sleep last night. I had backed the nut off the pump when I had the timing cover off. Was going to set the timing, but figured I could get by with it and just get the danged truck running. So I tightened it back down. I wonder if the timing slipped? So now I got to do something else I don't know how to do. I tell you, it sure has been a learning process.

Does anyone have any instructions on how to set the timing?

I have a Miller Diesel Timing Kit #6860. I know I can do it if I can be walked through by reading some instructions.

Also, I have read a few posts where the 175 pumps have a slight stumble up in the rpm range. What this truck is doing is way way way way way worse. It can't be the DV's.

The fuel pressure guage is a very good idea. It sure wouldn't hurt to have one.

"It can't be the DV's."

No?

You should have heard my '94 160hp pump with 370's and '022' or cut DV's... . :-laf

It's much better now with the 131's... but still stumbles because of the 370's. At least now it doesn't lope like a mud drag rail when I first start it up...

Matt

It certainly could be the DVs. Some 160 pumps have real problems with 370 injectors with the stock DVs. Mine runs fine, but I think it is an exception. My timing is at 16° so that may help.

My timing is at 16. 5° on my '94

It runs really choppy right around 1200rpm with the 131 DV's...

022's or cut-DV's smoothed it out quite a bit...

Matt

A set of 181 DV's can be gotten from vendors used for cheap. They're take outs from the 180 pumps and will work with what you have. A #11 is a "mild" plate for a '94-'95 pump.

To go against what everybody else has said up to now, let off one click on the governor springs. You say it "runs wild". Do you mean as in, runs up and down at speed. Uncontrolled idle? I think the springs are to tight. At least that is the first thing I would check. I kinda had the same thing with an uncontrolled throttle when applied. Still I lwould check the springs first.

Well, it runs perfect up til about 2,000, then it starts popping and blowing charcoal grey smoke everywhere. I haven't touched the truck in a couple of weeks... . been busy. But the springs are at . 012 now which I have searched and other guys with my pump and 4K GSK runs theirs at . 040. So I am going to tighten them up to that.

Between the timing and the governor springs one or both of them being adjusted should get it purring again. I just haven't had time to get back to finishing it yet.
