Just got the new truck

I just picked up my first Cummins powered Ram. It's a 2001 Quad Cab Long Bed as my sig. states I can't believe how much power this has compare to my '98 gasser that I traded in. I have a couple of questions.

1. After looking in the engine compartment I realized that the oil filter seems to be very inaccessible. What is the best way to change this. Do I reach up from the bottom of take it off from the top? Doesn't the oil drip all over the side of the motor?

2. I have scheduled to get a spray in bed liner installed. I plan on getting a Rhino Liner installed. What are the TDR members experiences with this. A friend of mine has one and says it is the best liner he has seen.

3. What are people's opinions of the new four wheel disc brakes versus the drum brakes on the older Rams?

Any info would be appreciated.

(1) The easiest way to get to the oil filter is to remove the air tube which connects the airbox and the turbo. It's going to be VERY difficult to get off the first time, so be prepared. A number of people put a plastic bag around the filter when they are taking it off so that oil doesn't get all over the engine.

(3) I love the 4 wheel disc on my truck. It stops a lot faster than my dad's LWB 2WD.

Welcome aboard! First time oil may be a little hard, but I purchased a strap type filter wrench which uses a 1/2" drive ratchet and mine came off fine --1st time--although the filter did get scrunched a bit.
Go at it from top with air hose off. Don't forget when taking it off that you turn the wrench "clockwise" from the top.

I ordered mine on 1/17/01 and took delivery on 3/20/01. This is my first truck. The computer says this tank is at 17. 8 MPG, not much highway driving.

I don't see why people think it's necessary to put a bag around the oil filter. I have NEVER had oil come out of mine when removing it. Not on my old '96, and not on my '01.

Congratulations. I am CT also and i have a 2001 4x4 QC too. Most of your questions were answered already. With the oil filter, generally if the truck is at operating tempature drain the pan first and it will siphon some oil from the filter so it wont drip. The one time i removed the filter first it leaked all over the place. And yes, it will be **** near immpossible to remove the first time. As for spray in bed lining,I have the Rhino Lining. I have seen the Armaliner, personally, i think the Rhinoliner is alot better. Looks alot nicer and after looking at a truck with Armaliner a year old, the Rhino is alot more durable. I agree with Rob, I use the bag as insurance, but have never dripped any in the bag. Much harder to get that new, oil filled filter threaded IMHO. The 1/2" drive strap wrench is what use also, works great.

No mess when I change mine either. I get the oil warmed up turn turn the engine off drain the oil, have a soda watch some TV then take the filter off. It seems to bleed back to the pan a bit and then no spill.

I'm glad to see these words of wisdom about giving some time before removing the filter. I've changed oil 3 times and have spilled some, eventhough I was trying not to. Next time, I'll let some time lapse first. Congratulations on the new truck. Great ain't they?

don't know about the "new" trucks, but one thing no one mentioned is be very carefull with the alternator terminals. put a piece of tape or something over them if not already covered. can really goof up the alternator and who knows what else if you acidentally short the terminal when trying to remove the filter.

I tried the bag method one time. It seemed to me it was more trouble than it is worth to hold the bag and the filter. I didn't get any oil on the engine though. The first time change was tough.

I appreciate everyones input. I can't belive how great this truck is. Just filled her up today and have increased my fuel economy by 5 mpg over the gasser. I hope that it will continue to climb.
I think that I definately will let the oil drain out for a while before I change the filter.
