Just got off the phone with Craig @ Goerend Trans about my New Trans that I am thinking about getting! It is going to be a heavy duty trans, 1 piece sonnax billet input shaft. Lower stall triple disk convertor ~1800rpm. Either a laminated flex plate or billet, still up in the air about that. Mag-hytec double deep trans pan Might stick with the regular output shaft instead of a billet as the weak link. They also said that the new trucks (05-07) has a throttle cable that is controlled by computers instead of the regular TV cable. So they suggested a shift enhancer box to increase trans pressure by engine power instead of throttle movement.

To those who have performance trannys what are your thoughts on this? What you would recommend?

TIA

I have a Goerend transmission in my 07 500hp 5. 9. I am happy with it their custem service is great always calls you back if you have a question or concern. Put 70,000 miles on it so far and using amsoil. The line pressure box is proably a good ideal I also have that as I am sure they told you it raises your line pressure about 20-30psi. It has 3 setting normal, tow and race. If I remember right each setting up gives you about 10-15 more psi. The setup you are looking at should work great mine has. I dont abuse it all the time but it handles the torque to turn 4 big tires over and most I have towed with it is about 25,000 gvw

That's exactly what I have, and its great!!! You'll love it! Mine is wired for the box, but I never installed the box.

MChrist,

What stall converter did you use? They told me there were 3 different stall speeds Stock, 1800 and a 1500? They told me there is a potential for a code 1740 to be set cause there isn't as much as am rpm drop during shifts. But I have 20 inch rims and 35 inch tires and the truck is a slug to get moving sometimes. What happens if the stall speed is too low?

I have the lowest stall, so I guess 1500, although I thought he said around 1700. I run 285/70/17s and my truck is not a slug to get moving, quite the opposite! I had that code come up a few times, so I just clear it with Smarty and it's fine. Hasn't popped up for over a year. I've noticed that with the low stall, that the truck always wants to move forward when in gear. Before, I could sit at a light with my foot off the brake, now that's impossible.
My twins utilize the stock turbo, so turbo lag doesn't seem to be any problem. If I just floor it from a stop, I'm whistlin' and spinning tires within 20 feet, maybe one second?? Then, the trans barks second and away I go!!

Looks like our trucks trucks are similar setup. The PS62 I have for my top turbo is a little bigger than the stocker. So mine may spool slightly slower than yours. However I am in the process of getting a stg 3 colt big stick cam, 125 horse tips and a floor it stg 3 pump. So I think any spool up concerns should be a thing of the past for me. So maybe the lowest stall convertor may do me well!

I think you'll be fine. Maybe ask them to look up what they did to mine for reference (last name, Christ).
I think they said that if I was going to go with huge twins, they would recommend a higher stall.

just ordered what I wanted from Goerend. Its also pronounced Garen, as in Karen with a G. Dunno if people knew that or not. I ordered a Billet flex plate, billet input, billet intermediate, lower stall triple disk converter, shift enhancer, Double deep mag-hytec pan. Cost a nice chunk of change, but its pretty much as built as I can get it. I did not get the billet output as they recommended having a weak link somewhere, and if I do break the output, its fairly easy to replace.

They are about a month out they told me, so I should be getting my transmission sometime in mid may! Can't wait !!! Oo. :D :-laf

If you do any towing stick with factory stall... .

Which I don't, so we figured the lower stall would be good for me. . Just be honest with them about what you want and what you are going to do with your truck and they will build you the right transmission.

Yep... But You may be ****** off when you start to tow in stop and go traffic... DG is our preferred and only Builder... But when it comes to the spec's you may want to check into More. .

Todd, I have the low stall and have no problems towing 12,400# trailer in traffic. Are you suggesting a higher stall so the motor can boost easier? If I had a large single or huge twins, I would probably agree.

Eaxctly... If you get stuck in stop & go traffic pulling your trans temps will shy-rocket. I had one customer NOT heed this warning. . He had to back 1/4 for his spot in WY + 15 miles of WY 400 . . he has hit 300* in the summer months. . the Back Country will kill your New Trans in short order with lower Stall. I installed manual fan switch and this has help considerably but it stills climbs.

Goerends said the common rails do not like the lowest stall speeds so I went with the mid-one. Not as low as MChrist, but lower than stock per their recommendations. They said there is a risk of a 1740 code, but it doesn't bother anything, also I can clear it with the smarty. I think with the 125 horse tips, cam and floor it cp3, low end shouldn't be much of a problem for me.

Ok how much do you tow... 50% Etc. . Dave ,Craig and the ladies at DG are close friends, and Honor what they speak... but they are the builder and NOT a performance Shop... its not the spool or the power ITS THE HEAT CREATED BY THE MORE EFFICIENT FANS in the TC. 90% of My driving towing with My 03. in Stop and go traffic with AIR on @ 85* towing I can reach 225* in 3 or 4 good pulls and that with stock stall with ease. If I do not get out of it or turn on the fan override heck it would just keep climbing until the trans light comes on 275*+. this is all moot if you don't tow.

Stall is a poor way to gauge a TC and its attributes, the stall doesn't really effect how the converter performs or creates heat. The heat is created from the churn of the fluid and that is related directly to the efficeny of the fluid coupling. Lowering the stall and not adequately addressing the efficiency still makes the TC run hot in fluid coupling.

Most good converters that address efficeny and use that to control stall will run cooler than any stock or near stock stall TC. The less time it takes to accelrate minimzes the heat generated in fluid coupling thereby lowering temperatures.

The reality is most of us don't spend much time towing heavy loads in stop and go with an auto. If we do thats what the aux coolers are for. Backing a trailer in reverse is going to create heat no matter what you do. The trans is not optimized to cool under those conditions and reverse is just plain hot any way you cut it.

A good tight TC towing is a huge plus, its just not an arguable point. As long as the engine can spool the turbo its not to tight, and, given it is built correctly will always run cooler. Thats the difference between a $400 TC and an $800 one.

The newer trucks have a nasty habit of looking at rpm drop on lockup and throwing codes. If the rpms ar not high enough but you can drive around that most of the time. A lot of the CEL problems are from the triple disk low stalls and the way the trans gets setup. A single one almost never has issues with unless it is really tight.

Trans is on its way here! was told it would be a month out when I ordered it so its actually here early! I pick it up tomorrow and I already have an appt to get it installed. I am sure its going to be a night and day difference. I can't wait!

My advice is make sure you have a temp gauge on the trans. If you plan to tow up steep hills, give yourself a test run if possible with the load and watch the temps. Don't take a hard driven trip without knowing what we already know and be way out there somewhere having to baby the thing to control the temps.
