Here I am

Just how does the “view new posts” link work?

slow site

When I boot up the box at work in the morn… I first scoop the link button “view new posts” that is in the upper right hand corner of the “discussion forums” tab. A few times I will go directly to another section (PM’s, “other” forum, etc…)

My question is this: If I check out another section and do not view the “view new posts” and then close out the TDR website, do I lose all the “new” posts in that area even if I do not view them? I did this just now and when I logged back on to view the new posts, there were only 6 new! This after not logging on in the 2 days prior. I enjoy the new posts feature and do not want to lose the new posts if I do not view them right away. Comments?... . Thanks. –frank.

Yes, new posts works based on the last time you visited the site to your newest (current) session.

Let's say you look at 5pm on Friday, then get a link to a post on Saturday and view it at 10am, the 10am time is logged in your cookies and that's the new time. You can go look at new posts then, but if you come back at 2pm, you will only see posts from 10am until 2pm.

Clear as mud?

:D

if I log on but don't get done reading new posts would like to be able to go back to same place since I read them a lot in the airport and may not have time to finish

No way to do that. It works the way Keith described. The database for it to function the way you indicated would be unbelievable huge as there would have to be a record for every user for every thread. What you can do is click on the "Get Last Days posts" link in the thread stats at the top and get all the posts in the last 24 hours and just start reading from where you knew you where last on but that will only work if it's within 24 hours. Outside of that you'd just have to go through each from reading back to when you knew you were on by the last post date and time.

If I am not able to finish reading the "New Posts" I simply copy the URL information that is in the address box in Internet Explorer and save it. Then, when I want to continue reading the new posts that I was not able to get to in my last session, I just paste the URL information back in the address box.

It doesn't put you back to the same place where you left off, but it will give you all the posts that were in the original "New Posts" plus all the new posts since you last logged on.

IMHO, this is still the best forum software that I have used.
