Just installed Hood liner-Big difference!

Hi all,

Got my new truck back from having a new new 6Speed put in last night. (The truck only has 270 miles so it's hard to call the transmission that came out "old". ) Anyway, while it was in the shop, I ordered a hood liner since the 2002s don't come with them. I snapped it in place and presto, I can hear the radio! Don't know why they aren't standard anymore but it was worth the $50 to get one from DCX.

I'm soooo happy to have my baby back!

Yes, I did the same thing last week. Makes a noticeable if not drastic difference.



I'm going to try covering the oil pan with foam and see if it makes the huge difference they say it does, and if so I'll order the pan cover from http://atpwrap.com/dodge_ram.htm

Got my new truck on Friday, and ordered the Hood liner on Monday. I can't believe this is one of the things they decided to drop off the truck to save money... ... c'mon DC, $50. 00! I also ordered the rear fenderwell liners... ..... my buddy has a 2001. 5 and it looks a lot better with the full liners hiding the inside of the box/frame since our wheel wells are so big and tires so small.

Well it sounds [pardon the pun] like the hood should be my next insulation project.



Since I've insulated or re-insulated virtually the entire firewall, the floor and the back wall, this may be the next place to spend some time.



I sure hope I'm as impressed as you guys are with the sound reduction.



BTW: the oil pan and valve cover are big noise sources as well as the firewall.

I took my hood liner out of my truck. I did not notice any more engine noise. Mice were using the liner for nesting material.



But, then again, I am one of the guys that removed the turbo silencer ring. I also recently installed a 4" Jardine exhaust. You know it cruising the interstate.



I noticed the new trucks have a silver colored intercooler. My 99 is painted black. Just another short cut from Dodge.

As if they aren't quiet enough already the next D- Max comes with a double wall oil pan with insulation between layers. It's supposed to lower cab noise by 7db. Sure would be a nice option for a Cummins.

What about useing the stuff from wally world,kinda like rino liner, only you brush it on instead of spraying. Brush it on the bottom of the hood then put the liner back on,then the firewall,bottom of the cab. Would this stuff work as sound deadner and rust prevention, or would it be a waste of time and money?





PS. cdtrani,I couldnt get the link to work. would a oil pan cover hold in too much heat,or is it not an issue?

I'm planning on trying some dynamat. I used it in car audio a lot to kill road noise. should work on diesels. It's self adhesive and almost impossible to get off.



It's a really dense asphalt type material.

I think the non painted intercoolers look swwweeeeeettttttt!!! If it wasn't such a PIA I would be glad to swap my black one out for a silver one. I saw a white sport 2002 3500 today on a dealers lot and the IC that shows through the grille looks killer. However I did notice they had a Black Sport right next to it with a black IC on it. I personaly think the silver IC on the black truck would be killer, I guess DC didn't.

it's not about looks

The black one has about twice the emissivity as the silver one. That allows for greater heat transfer through radiation. Many heat sinks and radiators are black for this very reason. Most of the heat transfer comes from forced convection instead of radiation so it's not that big of a deal. DC decided that it was not as important to paint the IC's for the minimal heat transfer benefit the paint gives.

Well all I can say is that it made a huge difference(the hoodliner) on my truck. The sound that was dampened most significantly was the valve noise. That noise was overriding the high frequency sounds on my stereo. The low frequency sounds and turbo whine are still pretty obvious to me.

I should note that from birth I have had a severe high frequency hearing loss requiring the use of hearing aids. I can hear low frequency sounds better than most people. For me the valve noise was so extreme that I could hardly hear the radio unless it was cranked to an uncomfortable level. Now I can listen to it at normal volumes. I love the sounds of my cummins, now those aren't the only sounds I can hear in the truck!BD

You might want to try my solution. I went to Wallyworld and bought so waffled foam. You can find it in the bedding dept.

I bought kingsize and cut it to fit. I put it under my hood liner

and in both front doors. Childbride said it helped. I don't hear too well, so I depend on her for input. It has been in there about

6 months with no problems.

I wonder what would happen if you stuck dynamat to the the oil pan and vave cover.



You don't haved to cover the valve cover. You could put it down the sides where it wouln't show. I wouldn't care how it looked on the oil pan.



Get the motor nice and warm, clean it with acetone to get all the oil off and stick that stuff to it. the heat would cause it to conform to the metal and it would never come off.



We used heat guns to get it to conform to interiors. neat stuff.

Guess I'm weird? Half the time I ride around with my Radio off so I can just listen to the CTD I love all of the noise it makes. One of the problems I have with the 03's is they will be quieter than the current model.

Hey for $50 it will be the cheapest thing I've ever done to these trucks.



Not that the new one is too noisy but it may help some. Tempted to take the one out of the 2001 as it's a rattle trap anyway. All the junk I carry plus the ladders on the rack make for one heck of a racket. That and it's got the cheapo interior, no carpet and plastic door covers with no cloth.



On another note, the new turbo is so much quiter than the HY I may have to yank the silencer ring to get it to talk to me again.

I'm with you... I only turn on the radio when I WANT to now, as opposed to needing to before due to boredom.



Sometimes all that ruckus under the hood is just too cool.

Oil pan is way too hot

Mark_Kendrick: The Dyna mat type sound proofing won't stay stuck to the Oil pan. The oil temp gets high enough to soften the asphalt 'glue' and the air flow under the truck blows it off the pan.



The same may happen on the valve cover, the 'wind' from the fan [if installed] may blow the stuff off the valve cover once it gets hot.



I made a foam cover that is held on with bungie cords for the for the oil pan and the valve cover.



Between the two of them and some foam on the bare areas on the firewall, my truck is much quieter.

I have an appointment next week to get the full ATP wrap stuff done to my truck while I'm down in LA. I'm VERY much looking foward to it! Ever since driving Frank Dz's truck, and then driving my own, I was totally sold on it. It's worth every cent of the $1200 or whatever it'll cost me to have it all done up.



The only thing that bugs me is having to cover up my pretty red valve cover!!

When I left work yesterday there was about an inch of heavy, wet snow covering the hood on my truck. The outside-the-cab noise was very noticably reduced by this, leading me to thing that a hard-core effort to the inside of the hood could be worthwhile.
