I just finished installing my new dual disc Mcleod clutch which I purchased from Jim Leonard in Riverside. He had me install two washers under the pivot arm to get the release right on the clutch discs. The new clutch is working great with none of the problems or side effects that I have heard about these clutches. The shifting is easy into and out of any gear, with the truck moving or stopped. There is no 4th gear grind that some were talking about or any noise in any other gear. I accelerated and got the boost up to 40 psi (not floored) and there was no sign of slipping. Also, there is absolutely no jerky take off with this clutch that I read about. So far very happy with my new "feature". (That's what the wife calls it) #ad

Ah, a feature is it dieselburner? #ad
Now here's another good reason to be on the TDR ... wife convincing buzz words. #ad

Jim installed mine & I took it easy for a couple of days. We went back 10 to the coast & up to San Simeon, then to Reno. I didn't start to turn up the boost until we got to Reno. Just making sure all was broken in ok. So far, nada a complaint from me. #ad

I installed a Mcleod this past fall. I'm not convinced it was worth the $$$ It chatters, unless I launch at around 1700 rpm's, is difficult to engage 1st gear, and transmits excessive torsional vibration through the driveshaft. The pedal pressure is great, and it doesn't slip, no matter how hard I launch or how repeatedly. But , I've been considering switching to a Centerforce. Mainly because of the driveline noise.

Ok since I'm new here tell me why these clutches are rattling,,One thing I know is I got talked into a Centerforce(should have done more reasearch in this buy)and it has got to go,,I am going to replace it soon as my mildly tuned up ride will power right thru it in 4th and 5th gear at times,,I also am in search of a quality piece so I am curious, without starting over the clutch wars, which is better and why?,,The Centerforce is fairly new(less than 10,000 miles) and is to unpredicable, one time it hooks and flies ,the next slippage,,I'd like to not waste my money a second time so any help is gratefull.

Hammer, Check out issue 30 page 38. It explains why the McLeod transmits a buzz or rattling in the driveline, especially at low rpm, low load. Talks about other clutch designs as well. Todd

massdiesel,
What kind of noise are you getting? I don't have any noise with mine at all. Did it get noisy after it broke in or did it start right away? I only have about 100 miles on mine so far but am very pleased with the way it operates. Hope it doesn't get noisy.
Steve

dieselburner,

I got the noise as soon as I installed the Mcleod. It's a resonating type of noise/vibration coming through the driveshaft. I've got a reg cab longbed, the driveshaft is fairly long, and the front yoke has a vibration dampner/harmonic balancer on it. Do you have this type of driveshaft? While I had the clutch out, I had the driveshaft checked. That balancer was a little loose. So I replaced the front yoke/balancer asembly at about $300, put in new ujoints, and had the shaft high speed balanced. I've had the noise since day 1 of install. It's noticeable at very low rpms with little to no throttle input and very noisy under load between 1600- 1900 rpms. Above that and the noise isn't reeally there. Is there anybody else with this clutch and similar driveline setup experienceing this type of noise? Todd

terminator,
I always had a vibration in my truck at very high torque levels in 4th gear when I was pulling my fifth wheel. Total weight with the trailer is 21K pounds and in 4th it would resonate the entire truck. But that was with the Centerforce. I am guessing that the springs on the Centerforce were maxed out under that kind of load and transmitting all of the shaking through the driveline. So far I haven't had a chance to pull with the new clutch so I don't know what it will sound like under a high torque load but it will probably resonate just as bad as the centerforce. For everyday driving the McLeod is as quiet as the stock clutch and it shifts better than the Centerforce did. By the way, I have the two piece drive shaft in mine. Been thinking of going to the 1 piece because I thought some of the vibration was coming from the carrier. It would also eliminate another joint.

Just look at the position of both front and rear yokes. They should be lined up the same. If one or the other are different, they are out of phase. Had a freind of mine who was putting his in and instead of taking it out of gear and rotating his driveline to bolt up rear yoke,he pulled it out of the splines and lined it up shoved it back in. That thing had a he11 of a vibration.

CF, I've got a solid one piece driveshaft. No slip joint, the front yoke is splined and slides into the tailhousing. Everything looks A OK. Thanks. Todd
