I just ordered the EDGE EZ for my 98. 5 2500 4X4 4. 10. Just wondering if I need gauges with the box? I also have a stock transmission, any upgrades recommended?

I think anyone on this board will tell you gauges are the first mod you should do. Fuel pressure, exhaust temp, boost, (inexpensive and fun) and trans temp if your running an auto. I would nix the boost if you have an auto so you can have a nice clean three gauge setup. On the transmission that depends. With an EZ I would think you would be fine with either an auto or stick (someone chime in on the auto). If you step up the injectors be prepared for a clutch from south bend on the stick or an upgrade on the auto

Gauges - yes! If you look at the Westach dual combos, you could get 6 gauges in a 3-gauge pod. I have EGT, boost, pre-filter and post-filter fuel pressure all in a 2-gauge pod.

I had :( a 2002 HO with the 6 speed of course and the clutch would slip in 5th gear with the edge EZ with my foot in it :D .

In my own opinion I would think the EZ would be alittle to much for a stock auto.

I never went out on EGT's but I agree with everyone that gauges are a must. I took my EZ off the day I sold it and my MPG went down 2MPG and the fuel pressure dropped about 2 lbs. About a week later he had to have the lift pump replaced. It was still under warrenty (24K miles) He understood, I told him before I sold it to him that the fuel pressure had dropped.

I strongly suggest gauges.

Guages are a must. not only are they cool. but you need them if you do any towing. at the minimum i would have egt and fuel psi. those are the most important. the stock auto should hold up fine with the ez. i know a guy that has about 40k on a 99 auto with a cmp that's always on 5x5. :D later, nick

That guy must be the luckiest S. O. B. on the planet because he's one of the 1/2 of 1% that can put that much hp to a regular dodge auto and get away with it. If you talk to any reputable hop up shop they will tell you that anything over about 70hp is going to make it go south much quicker than non-bombed and although an EZ is only about 50hp it pours on the power so low in the RPM range it is really hard on trannies. Diesel dynamics told me that flat-out up-front when I was buying mine. I thought I could be one of the guys that could get away with it if I babied by stuff. After 9 months of babying I got a smoke trans.

I don't even want to run a stock truck without gauges, but my first mod was a comp without the wire taped so it would have been the same as an ez. My truck ran cooler with the box on and was really hard to get egts over 1100 degrees ( I had it to 1175 once on a hard pull just trying to see how hot I could get it. ) I would definatly recomend gauges though, every truck runs a little different and yours might be runing hot with an ez. The point is, you don't have a clue where you are without gauges. Definatly get a fuel presure gauge, box or no box. These things should come stock with a FP gauge.

You will find that those recommending gauges have gauges-hence they think they are "necessary". Yet, you will find many honest posts by those with gauges and only an EZ saying that they have never had excess egt's. I know of many people in my area that have an EZ without gauges and have never heard of engine problems associated with egt's. I bet that the vast majority of those with just an EZ do not run gauges. You will find that most with gauges have either bombed the motor beyond just an EZ or are otherwise inclined to buy lots of other "add-ons" for their truck. Look at the list of "add-ons" in their signature to confirm that. Some people are more inclined to buy "add-ons" or accessories than the rest of us. I chose not to purchase gauges after carefully reading posts by those with just an EZ and gauges who confirmed there were no excess egt's. I agree with jwilliams3!

hhhmmm, well although I went excessive on gauges, I highly recommend at least the basic 3 on a stock truck.

Pre Fuel Filter - lets you know if (when) your $150 LP dies, which will help save upwards of $1000+ for an injection pump +towing +downtime

*Post Fuel Filter - allows filter change based on pressure drop instead of mileage intervals

*Pre Turbo EGT - lets you watch for overheating the turbo

Post Turbo EGT - enables shut down at the proper temp which adds longevity to the turbo

~Boost - fun to watch and aids troubleshooting problems

~Trans Temp (auto) - allows you to watch for hightemps

I had a 99 auto with an EZ and it lived for a year before I started slipping the torque converter. I had one on my current truck before I got the Comp. I coudn't get the EGT's over 1100 with it. I would go for the fuel pressure guage if nothing else. I had to replace a lift pump the 99 and lift pump and injection pump on the 01. Be prepared to upgrade the transmission in the near future if you drive hard.
