I was on the way to Atlanta Saturday to pick up a car and about 250 miles out my cruise control started jerking and about 20 miles later my speedometer quit. [verymad] I thought,"oh just great I am joining in with all the other adapter failures or speed sensor failures", so I proceeded on to Atlanta. When I stopped for lunch I crawled under and checked, much to my surprise my speed sensor with the adapter was lodged between the transmission and the cross member with the wires still attached. [laugh] It simply unscrewed it'self and fell there and stuck. I couldn't be that lucky again if I live to 100. I am known for quite the other type of luck if you know what i mean. [coffee]

I had the same thing happen on a short trip to pick up some roofing materials a month ago. Speedo drops dead and no cruise. I get home and see the wires hanging below the truck with the sensor attached.

Unfortunately, in my case, when I reattached the sensor, the speedo read 40% fast. As this has killed the cruise at highway speeds and I haven't found the source of the problem ( changed the sensor - no change) I modified an adapter from a wrecking yard to reduce instead of increase the sensor output. Speedo is still 10-15% fast but now cruise will work.

AAAhhhhh. Ladysmith, a beautiful place.

But that is not the thread here. I have had the spedo thingee drop off a couple of times. Usually it will be hanging by the wires. Last time I tightened a tad too much and cracked something and now no spedo at all. To heck with it anyway.

CrewCab,

I'm sure you did, but if not, spray out the plug with starting fluid and let it dry. Slap on some dielectric grease and see if that doesn't help.

tugboatphil,

I actually haven't tried that yet. It took me quite a while to determine what was supplied by pin 4 of the PCM (filtered ground). Its in the manual but under the fuel section so it was by accident I found the information. The plug looked clean but I will try your suggestion tomorrow.

Thanks

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread, but...

I left my camper plugged into the truck over the weekend, drained the battery. Anyway, when I went to get it jumped, the cables got crossed. Don't ask. Anyway now my speedo and Cruise dont work. The Cruise light comes on, but does not engage. Would it be the sensor? the last time I had one go bad, it affected affected the transmission too.

speaking of dumb luck... .

when i bought my crew cab, the steering box would continuously work itself loose from the mount plate, as well as the frame. id tighten it up, but it would always loosen up soon after. apparently i let it go too long one time, as i pulled into work and prepared to back into a parking spot. as i turned the wheel, the whole steering box fell off the frame.

i cobbled it back together and limped it home. then i bought some lottery tickets, which revealed that i used up all my luck for the day.
