Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Just put in a new lift pump

Yup. Not too bad of a task, took about an hour. I put in a new fuel filter too. 120k miles, old pump was 7/4 idle/wot. The new pump is 15/11 Not much else to say.

I would like to carry a spare with me. What tools are needed onboard to install new in a possibe over-the-road situation? I've got 38k on mine. Thanks.

You can do the job with just a 6" adjustable wrench. I leave it in the glovebox on trips.

I used:



Regular ratchet with 10mm and 1/2 (supposed to be 12mm I think) sockets for the bolts on top



11/16 open end wrench for the fuel fittings



And I forget what size the fuel filter nut is but taking it off will make it a lot easier.



Now on my original pump when I undid the 3 bolts on top the nuts didn't come loose, and it ended up unbolting the studs out of the pump body. After I got the pump out I had to put some Vise Grips on the stud/nuts on the bottom of the mounting plate, and use the 1/2 socket on top to get them loose.

What's the going rate for a lift pump? Also I was told by a guy that Carter makes a replcement for around $35. 00?? Any thoughts?

Carter IS the manufacturer for the OEM pumps. Are ya saying the one from DC for $400 is better than the one from Cummins for $135? Being more expensive doesn't always equate to being better, sometimes it just means you got screwed!

Fuel filter nut is 14mm. 9/16 will work also.

Nope, more expensive isn't necessarily better...

and I'll be the 1st to agree that paying DC more money for the same Cummins part is just freakin stupid.



But, just because Carter makes the pump doesn't mean it meets the same specs. I'm sure they make various quality pumps: good, better, best. Somehow I don't think you're getting their top of the line piece for $35.
