I have a 2002 3500 dually automatic (love it) and this weekend I moved a 24000 lb track hoe on my trailer. I questioned power a few times taking off at a light but I do realize I was pulling a LOAD. The problem came up when I was backing the trailer into my yard, it sank about 3 inches and the truck came to a hard stop. I put the truck in drive and at one point had it to the floor and couldn't get over 2000 rpm's and just couldn't even spin a tire. When loading the track hoe, I kept tracking it forward until it squatted the truck a pretty good bit, so I know the tires wouldn't spin easily, but I figured sitting in wet grass the tires should have turned. Either pulling the trailer out or atleast just spinning. Something just seemed like it wasn't getting enough power. Any suggestions???????

More info?

My WAG is too much weight on soft surface for the transmission. Did you unload the tractor and see what happened?

My educated guess is that the slip was coming from the clutch packs in the transmission. That is the only place it would happen with that much load on the tounge and also trying to move that much wieght in conjunction made the clutches slip. Sounds like you need a better transmission if you plan on moving that much wieght on a regular basis. JMHO.

I hooked to a 50ft mobile home and it required 2400 rpm to get the load moving on flat ground. I sank it into an old style crib sewer and it got ugly. The front of the truck came off the ground. I refused to drop it into 4lo cause I knew it would destroy more than just a tc or the clutch packs. Some jack time and we rescued it. Got it pinned between two trees on the way out and had to do a 20 point turn. Picked a bad line on the owners advice. Shoulda went with my gut.

I was a little embarrassed because I had to get a ford tractor to come and pull me out. My no good wife took pictures!!! Once the trailer got on hard ground the truck moved it just fine. I had to get around 1800 to 1900 rpm and then she would start rolling. I just couldn't understand why it wouldn't get over 2000 rpm's. I don't plan on hauling that much weight anytime soon, but do plan on hauling close to that. Any suggestions on what I could do to better things, add-ons, etc. ????

If you couldn't get over 2000rpm

The trans is not slipping. I think it is just over loaded for a stock truck. It also didn't help that the load sunk now you are moving more than the 25000lb load plus the weight of the trailer . Its the equivlent of choking the wheels once the load sinks. You couldn't spin the tires cause 30000plus lbs makes great traction. Merv

Ive been stuck in sand without a load and spun almost 2000 rpm. Its a lot of extra work for the engine but itll move it. Ive been stuck in my old gasser because I didnt have enough torque to turn the wheels in the mud. Without any load at all. Thats a sinking feeling when your 20 miles from the road(pun intended).

When you put it in 4 wheel low

Its easier on the engine and trans components its harder on the drive coponents after the transfere case e. g driveshafts and differentials. Merv
