I just spoke with a guy at Magnaflow and he quoted me $1295 for a complete 4" exhaust system from turbo on down including 5" stainless tip. :eek:That seems outrageous to me! What makes this so special vs. a Jardine to justify almost 3X the $?

Any comments would be appreciated!

Steve

I think I read Magnaflow's ad in the latest TDR, and they're claiming THEIR system is made with NON rusting Stainless Steel. Isn't that $1295 price comparable with Banks' Stainless Steel system??

banks exhaust turbo back is $895. I asked for it without any other banks stuff and thats teh number they gave me. I think I am gonna buy it.

Before you get romanced (influenced) by the price make sure to compare the products.

What is the wall thickness of the tubing?

What grade of stainless steel?

Are the hangers attached?

Are the mufflers comparable?

What is the warranty?

Does the package include everything?

I'm sure you look at those items, but it never hurts to drop a reminder.

My '95 exhaust was still going strong after 6 yrs. IMO stainless is a waist of money on these trucks, except for the tip ;) . I went with the Jardine at a third of the cost and I still got a Magnaflow muffler (deep sound) and SS tip from Jerry (nice guy). Sam

I agree with Dawg... ... Stainless steel exhaust systems are valuable for gassers, that's because the byproducts of the gas motor are much more corrosive. But the diesel exhaust systems just don't wear out. I wouldn't spend the extra money for stainless on a diesel. Just my $. 02.

i think the power shop sells the banks system for less than banks retail .

for 1295 you could buy the ATS stainless system with dual tailpipes and 5" tips , one out each side ... thats the system i want , but can't bring myself to spend that . i'm thinking i want stainless system myself , at least the tip , my chrome tip looks like crap after 1 new england winter ...

I just purchased from Bully Dog a 4" turbo back for $430. 00 + - $40. 00

shipping. I installed it myself (3 hrs & 1 6 pk Bud) with no torch or welder. Sounds and runs

great. I was extremely impressed with their service and attitude (same day shipping)

Be gentle this is my first post!!!!!!

Just common oil field trash.

I just thought about the $1295 price tag. I spent LESS than that on my Jardine exhaust+PE Comp+K&N RE-0880+Cummins Valve Cover. :D .

I have seen 6 year old exhausts on diesels in the NE that were made out of regular aluminised steel and have not rusted out yet. Stainless is really a waste unless you plan on keeping your truck for like 10 years, and even then, i can get two 4"turbo to tail Jannetty kits for less then ONE magnaflow. Seems pretty pointless to me. As mentioned by Ram_Kowboy, diesels dont have the high concentrations of corrisive condensation in the exhaust anyhow.

I've got school buses with the aluminized exhausts that are 10 years old and still good. If I have to replace anything, it's usually just the pipe that bends behind the tires. Rocks beat the pipe there, then they tend to rust on the outside of the pipe. I've also replaced mufflers that have straps wrapped around them to hang the muffler. They rust only where they contact the straps.

Unless you have money to burn and just have to have a shiny exhaust system, stick with the cheaper aluminized stuff.

One other thing... If you intend to weld the aluminized system together, you will probably experience rusting at the welds.

If for looks, sound, etc. that's OK. If it is for durability that's a little overkill! I sold my '83 Chevy 6. 2 when it was sixteen years old and the exhaust system was still all original. Just my . 02 worth

:)

My 92 d250 is in need of another muffler and tailpipe (3rd each), and I decided to take the long-anticipated plunge and go stainless this time. What can I say, "I love my truck", and with only 174k, a stainless single stack seems like a good investment. I found the mandrel bends and pipe (going with 3") at auto-jet, and they seemed to have lots of pieces/parts for the do-it-yourselfer, including turbo outlet fittings and bellows joints.

I don't know if it's the New England winters or the way the trucks are driven but some diesels apparently do much better than others on exhaust systems.

There IS a world of difference between the various stainless alloys; 400-series (ferritic) stainless is not satisfactory for this application. Austenitic stainless (304) will hold up forever. The cost of my system is about half the price of the magnaflow. If you're handy with a TIG welder (or have a friend who is), this could be a rewarding project, literally.

Been a member for a while, don't say much, but read a lot. You have a wealth of information in these forums which has saved me a bundle, and been the source of LOTS of amusement

:D . Just thought I could give back a little.

 It would REALLY be worth your while to do a little more checking and research before purchasing.

That may be full list price however, I purchased my Banks system for more than $150. less than that.

The Magnaflow stainless steel exhaust system may use seamless tubing whereas Banks uses seamed tubing... quite a difference in raw material price! The stainless steel exhaust system offered by Jim Leonard uses the seamless tubing and I believe he told me (in 1998) that he paid $25. per foot for it.:eek: (keeping in mind that it was not mandrel bent yet.

You will experience corrosion (i. e. , rust) at the welds almost immediately.

I had a short section of stainless steel tubing welded in the tailpipe section of my Banks exhaust system to clear my NW Custom mud flap and it was TIG welded in place... no rust!

..... my s/s exhaust system looks as good as the day I installed it :D
