I was in wal-mart today and went to the auto section to get some handcleaner and spotted a new oil on the shelf from Shell, looked at it again and it said ... (in a light blue gallon jug) Rottela 5w40 synthetic, made for north american applications, has better wear protection than conventional oil, better mileage, longer engine life, DANG! I',m just about due for an oil change anyway, but not shure about going fully synthetic. How would this compare to AMSOIL? I am currently running 15w40 Amsoil in my Honda atv and like the way my engine and trans work since I added it  Not so shure for my cummins?

Oil in your CUMMINS

Try the Amsoil in your CUMMINS-you will be just as pleased as your are with the ATV. Try it you just might like it!:D

I saw at it the local Walmart and it was around $15 something per gallon. Not worth the extra cost IMO. I will stay with Chevron Delo 400 15w40. Only 5. 50 per gallon and working for Chevron, I'm helping the company and myself.

Thanks guys

I think I might lean towards the Amsoil, They have a good variety at napa. Just how many miles can you run Amsoil before an oil change. I heard of some people that run synthetic oil that they would just change the filter and add a quart(depending on the type of driving they do), and every 3 oil changes they would change the oil completely. Does this sound like good practice or a bad Idea.

Don't think Napa carries Amsoil. One of the main advantages of synthetic oil is extended drain periods. Just as long as regular oil analysis proves the oil to holding up you can keep on going. There have been reports here of folks going 50k+ miles with no plans of changing the oil. I feel you need to go at least 15-20k to justify the added cost of synthetic. Need to also factor in the cost of analysis. Otherwise just stick to petroleum oil. Both systems work fine, the choice is yours.

Do diesels have the same problems as gas engines when switching to synthetics, i. e. you shouldn't do it to higher-mileage engines b/c the seals will begin to leak? Or can you just throw some syn in there anytime in a diesel?

Darel

Darel, it may be the same with diesels. When I was at Massdiesel's in Oct. a guy there with a white '96 Dually who switched to the 5W30 Amsoil when he was closing in on 200,000 miles. His engine leaked oil like a sieve. The whole underside was coated with a large amount of oil. Part of the deal though was he always drove the truck very hard with heavy loads, foot to the floor for all of those 200,000 miles. I don't know how much of the problem was due to going synthetic at high mileage or if the engine is starting to get tired. Also the 5W30 is thinner stuff which doesn't help.
