Just what does the computer compute?

I got my 1993 2wd truck back from the frame shop yesterday. I am pretty excited. It looks good, I watched the fellow do the final tweaking and saw how he checked it which inspired some confidence. I have a lot of experience working on boats where nothing is straight so what he did made sense to me. I am anxious to drive it just a little to get a feeling for how it is. It will need an alignment for sure. In the wreck the left front got hammered and the computer in the left fender broke its mount. What is that computer for? It seems like I read somewhere it is for the transmission? The guts of it don't look damaged only the mount so I will jury rig something. But do I need it to drive it around the block? Yes... . it does a number of things, but it is needed.

Well Todd you don't say if the truck is automatic. But, the computer on your truck controls several things. It is in charge of the alternator output, the cycling of the air conditioner, shift point on the OD and cold shift transmission response from sensors in the Automatic transmission. There are other things as well.



It reads inputs from several sensors around the engine, transmission and rear end. It is a puddle of puke that can drive you up the wall if it goes beserk. You can drive the truck if it runs but may not have OD, if you have automatic, as well as the other items noted, that is if the computer is damaged. There is pretty good evidence that the computer itself is seldom the problem but rather the wireing and terminals.
