K&N Air Filter

Do you guys recommend a K&N Filter. If so does anyone know the part number?

There is alot of pros and cons about the K&N air filters. My son and I run them on our trucks. Part number 33-2056 for 1999 to 2001.

I've used them in everything I've owned for almost 20 years. Just make sure you use the sealing grease. The airfilter housing Dodge gives us isn't the best sealing surface.

What are the advantages and disadvantages? Ive used them on everything Ive owned and have only had a bad experience with some jetting issues on a motorcycle.

Do a search on K&N, you will find plenty to read. There are many people who have removed them from their trucks due to oil and dirt residue on the intake tube and turbo impeller blades. If there is oil and dirt there, then there is oil and dirt plugging and reducing the efficiency [sp?] of the intercooler.



Even the very smallest amount of dirt will cause considerable damage to your Cummins engine.



There is an oil analysis pro who posts here that has stated many times that he can see a K&N filtered vehicle in the oil analysis every time. He is seeing high wear metals and high silicon content in the oil.



It's just too much of a risk, just go with stock filter if your truck is stock, or go with a BHAF if you want a 'BOMB' that looks pretty cool [IMHO].



The BHAF is being used on many very high horsepower trucks, and is holding up very well. It is a dry paper filter so there is no issue with oily residue on the turbo impeller or intercooler or IAT sensor.



Do a search on BHAF, and sit down for a lot of reading.



Hope this doesn't start another K&N war!!

If you are considering a K&N for air flow reasons, you might also take a look at the foam air filter elements used in off-road racing. They have improved air flow and catch more dirt than gauze filters. I have used both and never had a problem with either.

I used K&N on my 95 and 99 trucks. I put 211,000 miles on the 99 and just before I sold it I changed the IAT sensor as it was dirty black as were the turbo blades. (Read about this on this site). I have 57,000 miles on my 2002 I purchased in November of 2001 and have remained with the paper filters I buy from Cummins. I check the turbo blades at every oil change and they are still spotless clean. Have not checked the IAT as performance is ok. 95 and 99 trucks ran ok with the K&N.
