I've heard several people mention they use a K&N air filter. Just wondering, is it just an element you install or do you have to change the whole box, and does it really do anything for your vehicle, like improve fuel economy? How expensive is one of these do dads?
I have a 2001 with the Cummins.

There is so much info and different opinions on the K&N. It works for me. Best thing is to use the search engine on this site or just click on show topics to go back even 60 days and you will find so many opinions and discussions on this topic it will take you all day to read it.

There is one that will replace your "Stock" filter in the "stock airbox. Some people are using the RE0880 and removing the stock airbox (its a cone type filter). Some poeple swear by them, some people hate them. Its a matter of opinion. Like suggested above do a "Search" on this topic and you will find numerous threads on the subject I am sure.

there isn't a graphic for my mood (a yellow face with the smile going horizontally... neither smiling nor frowning). i just installed the "stock" replacement (square... goes in the stock air box). i was expecting a gain in mileage. i'm sure the only gain in mileage (less than . 5mpg) was due to the fact that i kept the mph's to under 70.

the only "change" was that i can now hear the turbo spool up. not loud, just enough to know it's there.

i got a bigger kick in the pants when i tightened up some nuts on the turbo.

i say try carl's latest group purchase or better yet... . keep your money in your pocket.

I agree. Stock replacement K&N is a waste of 70 bucks. Cant tell any difference between it & stock, except slightly more intake noise.

The RE-880 might be better.

More BOMBING to come!!

You have to believe in a product. I believe in the K&N filter and I have had good luck with them. I have the K&N on, 1 dirt bike, 2 quads, 95' Suburban, '88 chevy pickup and not the Dodge Cummins. J. C. Whitney offers it for $69 dollars but you can get a 10% discount on that. Use the sealing gel you get with it and you will never have a problem. You never have to buy another filter ever again. Clean it every 40,000 miles and you will never have a problem. Of course this depends on your driving conditions. Dirty air, clean it more often. Good luck

I like the RE-0880. It's cheaper, you don't have sealing worries, and you get rid of that big honking airbox & free up some space under the hood.

I've had zero problems with my K&N RE-0880. I like the looks and sound of it. Turbo vanes and hose are always clean. I've got the red pre-filter on mine for extra protection. The filter itself is clean as new.
