Okay, I am not really stupid but I went into the auto parts store and totally forgot the sealant I used for my K&N filter to keep the dirt out of the engine , obviously I have not redone my filter. If it is lithium grease then I am gone because I actually had it in my hand. If anyone has a spare minute could they direct me , Thanks Dale ( I know certain things go with age but I cant remember what they are )

Dale: The grease supplied with my K&N was 'Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Based Lubricant with Syncolon (PTFE)'. I would use this or silicon O-ring grease avalable at some hardware stores and all dive shops. I don't know if regular grease would attack the rubber seal of the K&N, but I hope that they would use a oil, grease and diesel resistant seal. You could give them a call and report back to us.

I don't know about where you bought your filter but mine came with a tube of grease in the box with the filter. Check another box in the store.

It should be there.

I also used grease right from the grease gun. Because it is such a crappy fit right from the factory I think next time I will stick on some weatherstripping instead of grease, just like what you would put inbetween a canopy and truck bed only thinner! There is a nice groove around my K&N and I think that will help. Wadda ya think?

John, sounds real good just make sure to put the weather striping on the dirty side of the filter, hate to have to untangle it from the turbo fan!!

Swamp Donkey:
I think that when a small piece of weather stripping breaks off and is sucked thru the turbo you'll wonder why you didn't just use grease.

Dale:
I did the same thing. When I got home went to the K&N web site and found the correct part number for the sealing grease.
Here it is. Hope this helps.

K&N Sealing Grease provides an airtight fit around sealing surfaces on all types of air filter elements. It resists heat and will not melt or run off. K&N sealing grease is not to be used on clamp-on filter elements.

Thanks Ifflem,

Putting it on the "dirty" side makes sense. I might have a bit of a defective air box, because no matter what kind of air filter I use it doesn't completely seal to my satisfacion. What happens is when it is on, I can easily squeeze the housing in the right front corner closest to the engine and there always seems to be play in there. Noticed this when new and have always compensated for it though.
Well the grease worked, but I thought weater stripping might be my real answer.

Landshark,

You have me paranoid now! #ad

John,I don't think I'd worry much about weather striping coming off. What I would do is apply it to the lip on the dirty side(bottom of the airbox)after cleaning very well with alcohol. Don't use any foam type, use the solid rubber ribbed kind, think it's called EPTM or something like that. I've used this type numerous times in very tuff conditions, when applied to a totally clean surface it is actually very hard to get it off even when you want to and will last for many years. Think I'd still use K&N sealing grease with it though.

I use just plain Vasoline on the seal. Holds
up pretty good. No leaks around the rubber
seal.

Thanks to all that replied, I appreciate your time. I noticed everyone puts there truck in, 1996, 2500, Driftwood, ext. cab 2wd. 4 in. exhaust. K & N, different intake manifold, star wheel cranked up, turbo adjusted, similar to a TST fuel plate installed (not sure what type), Mcleod clutch, BD exaust brake, (5 speed), Mag Hy Tec differential cover. 95,000 and going strong. Thanks
