Recently a friend who has a 2001 2500 DC added a K&N air filter. He says his HP increased noticeably but fuel economy went to pot, to the point that he went back to the original air filter. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I have over 30,000 miles on my K&N filter in a stock box. I noticed an increase in HP and MPG. I recently drilled holes in my stock box to increase the turbo whine. I have not had a problem, yet.
It is impossible that more airflow will physically cause poor mileage, but as mentioned, he is probably driving the truck harder now since its faster and that would expaling the lesser MPG.
Since he has gone back to stock air filter I think I will give his K&N a test over 2 or 3 tanks of fuel. The wife might object to the added turbo whine.
I had the same experience with mileage drop with a k&n in the stock air box. I didn't change my diving style once it was installed either. Went back to the stock air filter after a couple of months of being disgusted with the dropping mileage. In fact my mileage has yet to get back to where it used to be prior to the k&n experience.
