I have heard that some trucks with stock filters had a black residue on the turbo.

Fellers,I just got an e-mail back from K&N filters and Don told me that all of their filters are good down to 1 micron,I am satisfied with this preformance and will be going to K&N soon,Like many have said the seal is the most important thing,a little thick grease and vwoila #ad

Don't you mean on the clean side of the filter? Who cares if the dirt gets past the seal on the dirty side?

After reading several posts a few months back I went and checked mine (K&N) and I found the turbo blades had some grime. I think it just could be from the oil in the filter. I sealed mine very good when I first installed it.

Paul, now you're getting me confused. It makes no difference which side you grease as far as making the seal. The idea,I think,is to keep the grease on the dirty side.

Upper side is the clean side, this should be the one that no dirt should get through. I would also grease the bottom side, this is the dirty side. This should be done as extra insurance. Just do both, for a good nights sleep.

I have the stock filter ( only 1700 miles on the truck ) and when I pulled the inlet tube off the turbo to remove the silencer ring, the turbo blades had a lot of gunk on them. Like sticky goo, not dirt. What could it be?

I'm happy to report that the K&N is back in and that great turbo whine is back along with much quicker spool-up. I checked the hoses and the turbo blades and was well satified that I'm stoping the dirt. I can not believe how much more restrictive the stock filter is!! I cleaned and re-oiled the K&N and used lots of white lithium grease to seal the filter in its place.

I have used K&N filters on my '93 for over 100,000 miles. Although mine is a first gen truck and the filter has a much better seal I wouldn't use anything else. I have run oil analysis at every oil change (6000 miles) and have never had an oil sample that was not ok to continue using. All dirt contamination was well in the low end of the safe range. If you want to test the K&N do a before analysis and an after analysis and compare them.
Happy Trails
