Where does this grease go?

I went back to stock because I didn't want to take a chance. I also didn't like the loose fit of the k&n. I noticed no diff in performance, was a little quieter with OE filter but I am OK with that.

I have been using the K&N for about 2 years now. Every July I take my truck out on a grass/Dirt Motorcycle track to remove about 3000 stakes that hold up 10,000 foot of ribbon. The dust is real bad. Most time the dust is about 4" deep over the whole track. When I am done, I drive 250 miles home, then clean the filter. I have seen the filter so full that you could not see the fan folds! Still no residue on my turbo blades, airbox or intake system! Sealing it with greese is the answer. First time I used the special greese that came with the filter, now I use bearing greese, just like I do to seal my dirtbike filter.

Don't you mean on the clean side of the filter? Who cares if the dirt gets past the seal on the dirty side?

After reading several posts a few months back I went and checked mine (K&N) and I found the turbo blades had some grime. I think it just could be from the oil in the filter. I sealed mine very good when I first installed it.

Paul, now you're getting me confused. It makes no difference which side you grease as far as making the seal. The idea,I think,is to keep the grease on the dirty side.

Upper side is the clean side, this should be the one that no dirt should get through. I would also grease the bottom side, this is the dirty side. This should be done as extra insurance. Just do both, for a good nights sleep.

I have the stock filter ( only 1700 miles on the truck ) and when I pulled the inlet tube off the turbo to remove the silencer ring, the turbo blades had a lot of gunk on them. Like sticky goo, not dirt. What could it be?
