K&N filter sealking

I installed the K & N air filter shortly after purchasing my y2k 3500 4x4. After 7000 miles I sent my oil in for analysis and it came back with a higher than normal silicon content which they said could be a leak around the air filter allowing dust to get in. I was in the desert outside of Yuma, Az and did do some unpaved desert road riding. My question is this: Can you use vasilene around the seal to make it more air tight?

I've run just about every kind of air filter on my truck over the seven years I've owned it and I've come to the conclusion the design of the stock airbox is inherently flawed. You can never get it to seal around the edges no matter what kind of filter you install or how hard you try to "seal" it around the perimiter. Every oil test I've done with the stock box comes back like yours did. I believe part of the problem is the engine just sucks in too much air. IMO the best filter out there is Psychotty's K&N. Nothing even comes close. My $. 0002 worth.

On my '98 I had a K&N airbox filter. Oil analysis always came back with very low silicates (like 6ppm). I used a good dose of grease or vaseline around the filter edge. I probably don't have to remind you of how much dust and sand there is here!!! Had quite a dust storm Sunday.

If I were you, I'd step up to the RE-0880 cone filter #ad

there's a fairly long "thread" in "products" about the KN (which i dearly love) I attached a "what grease" question in there, but saw no answer--- the question is, Is "any-ole" grease OK for the edge seal, or gotta be the Superlube from Permatex (which no one seems to have) ? ----may do a Scotty Air sometime soon, and later, after the BOMBing requires greater enhancing, upgrade that to a Psychotty... Anchor your stuff down, here comes that vacuum cleaner truck again!

I'm a fan of K&N myself, as for the silicon:

I'm almost completely certain high average silicon is NORMAL in a new engine the first few oil changes. Let that puppy break in about ten thousand miles before you get too worried about the analysis -- unless you see EXTREMELY unusual numbers.

Hey Rich M, I actually called K&N and asked them that very question awhile back, complete with the part about noone having the permatex sealing grease. He says,"You can get it at Napa. " I says,"I manage a Napa, and it ain't even in the catalogue. " After a bit of poking and proding, he said white lithium grease would work fine, and that the grease was pretty much a precautionary measure, since the turbo sucks so much air. They did say the grease needed to be fairly heat resistant, so I don't know about the vasoline.

How about silicone grease. Heat resistant and good for rubber.
