On my 04. 5 I have the AFE replacement kit with the torque tube (I think the price was somewhere over $500 for everything). I spoke with K&N and their FIPK kit was $239 with the filter. Anybody tried one? I'd rather save some money if the result isn't to different and throw the money at gauges or an edge with juice.

Thoughts?

aFe is just came out with a "Stage 2" or "3" or something like that that has the torque tube built in. I like the idea and am getting one tomorrow

Has anybody actually heard of premature engine failure due to running a K+N?? I haven't. They are always on the bottom of the list when it comes to filtration tests, but there a lot of guys who have been running them for years without one single problem. I suppose if you drive in high-dust conditions a lot they wouldn't be too great. I have the PG7 on mine now, but I wish I had waited for the K+N to come out. I had one on my '01 and that never showed any ill effects. For daily drivers, I think K+N would be fine. For extreme conditions, maybe not so much.

Yeah, Sean put a K&N on his 91 when it had about 100k miles on it... it's only got about 385k on it now, and it's still running strong... it's ruined!! :(

I run an Airaid intake. I have had K&N and Airaid on several gassers I have owned and have been very pleased with both. A lot of members go aFe proguard 7 intakes, and that is great as they are highly regarded here. Airaid uses a 7 layer filtration system as well, which doesn't get mentioned here.

In extreme conditions like severe dust, dirt, snow, acorns:) etc, you might consider the aFe although I think the Airaid will perform as well. My travels are almost all highway/interstate and the Airaid is just fine, so is the extra $200 I have to spend on other stuff.

The other thing to mention is that I think it is a good idea to do a pre filter as well.

I am not against K&N, aFe at all. We all can choose what works best for our application. I happened to choose Airaid based on performance vs cost.

I had a K&N on my 91. 5 W-250 for about 10 years. I started noticing quite a bit of dust on the inside of the plenum between the filter and the turbo. You could run your finger around the inside of the plenum and see where it cleaned off the dust. Your finger would have the fine dust on it. Looked like you ran a pencil lead on your finger.

I took good care of the filter cleaning it more often than it needed because, I live in a desert area of the country.

Called K&N and they gave me all my money back and asked if the filter had done any damage to my engine. Sounded like they were willing to compensate me for any damage. I thought that was very fair of them.

That filter did move a lot of air. With the K&N, I could easily get over 30lbs. of boost. Now, with a stock filter, I can only get 25lbs.

I installed an AFE ProGuard-7 on my '03 because of the better filtration.

There's a good article in the latest issue of the TDR about airfilters.

Also, on the Duramax site, there's an interesting test on airfilters, done by SPICER. The GM stock filter did the best.

Hope this helps. Joe F. (Buffalo)

Trash your motor to save 250. 00 . K&N sucks Some of us have been ruining our motors for years.

the K & n filter i was running did a horrible job of filterting the air. when i took the k&n off to install my afe, i almost wanted to send some pictures to k&n and get some monies back! :-{}

get the afe, its a little more initially, but will do a much better job.

Cummins recommends NOT using K & N on its diesel engines. Scott Bentz, Cummins Rocky Mountain veep, perfers paper filters. Conventional wisdom says if you gonna use an oiler, aFe is the way to go because of superior air flow AND filtration.

LOL! I don't need no stinkin' air filter. In high school we used to run without any air filters and never had an engine quit because of it. My old '49 Ford loved sucking that raw LA smog. ;)
