OK, so I was out screwing around a while ago, picking up my new carpet kit, and I wandered into this little accesory shop across the street from the cap shop. Just for grins, and the fact that I'd heard that my stock filter was crap, I picked up a K&N filter for my truck and put it in in the parking lot. I put about 30 miles on the truck afterward, and the initial impressions of the truck afterward was that it accelerated with a bit more punch, and that the turbo wind-up was a bit louder, both good things in my book. Has anyone else had similar experiences, or am I just in the land of wishful thinking and paying too much attention to a small mod?

Not your imagination... your engine is a big air breather and you just helped it breathe a little better. There are many, many posts on K&Ns here and opinions vary. Be careful with the bombing thing, it's a slippery slope.

Trust me, Vaman, I am familiar with the slippery slope theory. Guages are coming on the next paycheck, then it looks like the EZ soon to follow. I feel like I've got a needle in my arm, and every time I read this post the plunger just gets pushed in a little farther. But, I just threw down some good cash for an upgraded ring for my better half, so that gives me the green light to throw all sorts of cash into my toy! Might I suggest such bribery to my fellow junkies out there, it goes a long way for massages and truck parts!

I just threw one in too. Hard to say there is an increase in power, but the turbo is much louder--I can now hear it spool up and down. I suspect that there must be an effect, even if it is only allowing the turbo to spool up faster, which I'm thinking translates into more power at lower RMP.

Although opinions vary on the K&N, it does what it says it will, let your engine breath better. Just remember to follow the installation and servicing instructions to a T, or you will have problems. Unless you are on really dusty roads a lot don't even open the airbox again for 50k or if your filter minder goes up half way. Every time you open it you risk it not sealing well. If you want to make sure it's filtering well remove the intake hose from the turbo and wipe with a white rag. I think a lot of the problems folks have with them stems from over servicing and peeking in the air box too often.

This has been quite a subject (putting it mildly). The K&N question definitly goes in the "Personal Preference" dept.

Without forcing my opinion on ya, the arguments for buying one include, more turbo sound, quicker spool-up, lower exhaust temps, long lasting, better filtration, more airflow for bombed motors, & probably something I've forgotten.

The opposite side argues that there is no more power, & less reliable filtering. There have been claims of the filter seperating internally, a sealing problem around the edges, oil getting on turbo blades & internals of the intake tract.

Just for kicks, & ALOT of interesting reading (some pretty heated) do a search, and go back a ways. You may see theres no right or wrong on this one.

I know Illflem's been there & done that. #ad

Dangit just couldn't help it! Had to throw the sig in.
