hey! this is my first post with the new system, hope i do not

screw up! any way my question is do i treat(oil) the k&n foam

pre-filter? tyhanks for any and all help :)

Which filter are you referencing?

The RE-0880, which is the main cone filter comes pre-oiled. You do not need, and should not add any oil to the RE.

The "pre-filter", 25-0880, is not pre-oiled, and you should oil it. Get the spray on oiling bottle, and lightly spray the filter on both sides. Put it in a gallon baggie and "massage" it. Take it out and wipe it off if it feels too "wet" with a towel. Do not over-oil the pre-filter or it could weep through the RE and end up in the turbo blades.

24V-Diesel is correct... you will need to lightly spray the prefilter... #25-0880. I just washed mine for the first time... actually watched a friend do it... man, was it dirty! I ordered some spray oil from diesel injection of texas, so will reinstall it soon.

I have never oiled my K&N pre-filter from both sides... just the outside (moderately at 100% coverage). I purchased one of the K&N pre-filters for a previous 4x4 just after K&N released them for sale... it was a 14" dia. x 6" tall version. If I remember correctly, the instructions stated that it should be oiled from the outside although, it was a looong time ago and I'm not sure if they mentioned oil application to the inside of the pre-filter or not. 24V-DSL, did you read that somewhere?

Also, after you massage the oil into the filter you can get that Columbian drug lord look by running the excess through your hair.:eek:

:D

What????

:eek: Are you serious? :D You mean you purchased your own K&N filter maintenance kit after you used all my K&N cleaner and oil????:eek:

How does that work?

:D:D:D:D

John... a few corrections to your posts...

1. I did NOT use all of your cleaning supplies. You did. I just watched! :D

How does that work? Pretty well, I imagine! :D

Since I just received my spare from Diesel Injection Service, here is what it says:

Oiling: Saturate the filter inside out and massage until fully covered. Squeeze out excess oil and install on filter cage.

CAUTION: Do not wring out filter!

How's that?

Hmm... ... Saturate?? LOL if you ring out your filter I dont think it would fit anymore.

Sky... saturate seems like a pretty harsh word... and I will not follow that... but that is word for word off of the instructions!

IMO...oiling 25'r

John and Rob... .

I did spray the pre inside and out, but very lightly with the spray bottle. I agree, "saturate" is not the goal. The squeeze K&N oiling bottle is just too difficult to control the application. It is very easy to over apply the oil with either type of oil. A friend over-oiled, and he knew it, so he let the pre stand on a newspaper for a few days, and it weeped and puddled considerably. He was finally able to get it right by using a bath towel to wipe off the excess.

When done, I can draw my fingers across the filter and just come up with a slight residue on them... . not enough to provide good hair control, John ;)

I'm going to clean and re-oil the pre at my 15K oil change in another week or so. It's looking like it needs it, but the RE underneath is like new.

Rob... . for John's benefit, you do mean the hair and not the result of thousands of fried banana and peanut butter sandwiches :D

Do we (in the Great Pacific Northwest) really need to use the pre-filter? I live in western WA and could see using one maybe in Eastern Washington or Las Vegas, but it just doesn't seem to be that dusty where I'm at. I was under the impression that the pre-filter was designed to be used for off road racing, construction etc.

I guess it's kinda like changing your oil @ 3k vs. 5k. It will probably be just fine @ 5k, but you change it @ 3k for piece of mind etc.

24V-Diesel... LMAO! John is a very nice guy... I was only teasing.

SCooke... as far as I am concerned, I agree with you on western WA. I go to eastern oregon quite a bit, and to Montana, so I use one all of the time. The extra restriction for using one is something minimal... something in the 3 percent range. I can verify that after watching mine get cleaned, it catches a lot of stuff! I do go off-road in mine... sometimes in extreme dust conditions.

SCooke...

I agree totally with you, but I use the pre because it will be much easier to service. I've cleaned and re-oiled other K&N's, and think it's a PITA... . just the right amount of oil, in each pleat, blah-blah.

If the RE truely offers any performance enhancement, the pre isn't supposed to restrict flow any more than~2-3%. As I've said, I've got almost 15K on my K&N combo, and the RE looks brand new. I don't go off road, but if I did, then the pre would certainly be a must. I started out thinking like you until I saw the 25'r on another truck. It's only about $20.

Rob..... ;) I know you were teasing..... I saw John at Timberline, but didn't get to formally meet him.
