K&N Question

I have the large K&N cone filter with the thick red foam pre-filter and when I removed it this weekend, to clean and reoil, I noticed some black oily substance on the fins of the turbo and around the inlet of the turbo. I this normal from this filter? And is this an indication of oil and or dirt entering the air system, and is this a problem? Thanks for your input.

Is the filter new? -and- Is this the first time you have taken the filter off since installed?



If it is, most of the K&N filters I have seen come OVER oiled from the factory. The black on the turbo blades is probably a little oil residue from the filter. Clean the turbo blades with some Q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol and wipe out the intake tube. Mine new K&N did this too, but after I cleaned everything up, it has not showed up since. (over 3 months now)

Thanks for the reply. I bought the filter from another member. This is the first time I have removed, cleaned and reoiled. I found no grit or anything like that, just some oily residue. I cleaned it off and thought I'd check inside again in about a week. I like the sound of the turbo spooling up but don't want to threaten my engine with dirt.
