K01 recall...Here is what I did.

I got the notice on my Calif registration that I had to have the K01 recall done BEFORE I could re-register my '07,5. 9 truck. My truck gets real good fuel mileage and runs good. I had read here about some nightmares guys had after various unwanted ECM flashes.

I went to my appointment with the dealer this AM. He let me talk to the tech about my truck and my concerns. He looked up the K01 recall on the computer and only about 25,000 trucks were truly affected with the non communication issues. I asked him if he could just put the star tool scanner on my truck and see if it communicates ok. He did only that and came and told me it communicated ok. I asked if we could skip the re-flash and he confirmed it with the service writer. I left with the certificate for the DMV and NO re-flash because I didn't need it.

The comm issue is not with the scanner,but whether or not the smog machine sees that the monitors show being completed

If your Smarty software is new enough it will be fine

I just went through this yesterday and wished I had seen the post... .



Got the DMV notice and put the Smarty Jr back to Stock settings. No problem.

Tossed the keys to the dealer and took a long walk. An hour one way, an hour back. Then I sat in the waiting room for yet another hour. Service rep finally came back with an orange scribbled card for the DMV to show compliance. Got home, put the check in the mail.

Then the real fun began. I plugged the Smarty Jr into the truck to see what would happen. The error msg came up so I went inside to update the box. Wow, it all makes sense in theory, but it took me quite a while to finally figure out how to get the latest version with Windows 7.

Tomorrow I plug the Smarty back into the truck and play with some various settings. I've got a stock trans and don't really need tons of black smoke, but it should be fun to experiment. I didn't realize how nice the box is until I was back on the stock settings and missed the extra oomph from the previous "tow" settings.

If I had seen your post, I would have brought a six pack and got the form signed...

I had to tow my 28ft TT with my truck WITHOUT the Smarty. I normally keep it on the TOW setting. Man, I was surprised at how HIGH my EGT's climbed when I came home up a 2. 5 mile steep grade. It is going back on today!
