Has anyone paid a diesel shop (or Dodge) to check the KDP issue, and if so, what did it cost you?

I'm a new owner, by the way, and this is really great. Coming from a V10, I've really learned a lot from the threads here.

Most shops won't know what you're talking about. Just get on a jig list and do it yourself, if you can change your own oil you can do a jig fix.

ifflem,

Is it REALLY that easy? Sounds like several folks have blown gaskets doing the fix with improper air pressure. It seems like a no brainer, especially since there is a kit for purchase that has both of the fan wrenches included.

It's that easy but you still have to follow the simple instructions. Folks who have overpressurized and blown gaskets weren't following instructions. A vacuum cleaner on blow is all the pressure you need.

You know how some folks are- more is always better- doesn't always work that way.

You don't even need to buy a jig, all it will cost you is shipping to the next user. Read the first thread in the 12 valve forum, it tells you how to get a jig and also has instructions.

Even pulling the cover to tab it isnt that hard, we hadnt done one before and it took 2 of us 4 hours to do 2 of them and we didnt hustle at all. If a shop couldnt tab the dowel pin in 2 hours they are goofin off

I didn't bother with the pressurized air, even though i have it right in my shop. I just repeatedly cleaned the hole as i drilled it. i used cutting oil on the tap threads and kept cleaning it off and reoiling it. I bet not too many chips fell into the engine. I'll see at the next oil analysis though...

If the compressed air thing is a point of stress for you then i recommend skipping it. Just be mindful of the aluminum chips and you'll be fine. I'm sure more chips are created when a cover gets broken than what you'll ever make with that drill and tap.

Read the sticky thread on Shops that have a KDP Jig

You have 2 within 120 miles from you. Contact both of them for a price quote.

It should be around $100 IMHO

There is more than enough info to do it yourself on the TDR site, other Dodge Cummins sites, and in the instructions that come with the kits. The question is, do you feel comfortable drilling into your gear cover yourself , or do you want someone else to do it? Worst case, the pin is part way out and you have to pull the cover (I think I might get outside help then, due to the apparently tricky seals). Otherwise, from reading hundreds of posts, it seems that the Jig fix is well within the competence of most shadetree mechanics. I`m going to try it myself as quick as I can get a kit.

I've priced it in my area (NJ). I was quoted $300. 00 for the jig method.

I ended up tabbing it because the front seal was starting to leak and the cover had to come off anyway. Took me about 4 hours alone in 100 deg heat. I loctited and torqued all the bolts in there while I had it off.

I took my time.

One thing I'll add here is this... .

The cost for the tab is WAY cheaper than the repair cost for a KDP explosion. I had one under warranty before I knew about it and the second one I paid for due to warranty being voided by dealership. It was not cheap, nor was the tow bill to move the truck to a shop to do the work correctly... ... ... ... Andy

P. S. -BTW,the milages they happened at 1st one at 32,503 miles and the 2nd one at 54,965 miles.

Jig fixes for 250. 00-300. 00 ... ... ... ..... What a rippoff. They want to pay for the jig with each fix I guess or 45 minutes work = 5 hours labor:rolleyes:

I paid my favorite Dodge dealer $215 for the tab fix. This included labor, new seals, gasket, etc.

Thouht it fair

We charge two hours at $60 ,, or $120 and new crank seal and cover gasket= $180 total. . I only know of one other shop in the Area that does the tab,and they are about the same amount. .

I would like everyone to know that the dill jig method of fixing the KDP is so,so easy. There is nothing hard about, except telling yourself, YOU CAN DO IT! Trust me, it is that simple. The hardest part of the whole process is getting the fan nut loose, and heck you get the wrenches in the deluxe kit, to do that. My first ever attempt took me 90 min, and that was from the very first moment I started , till I had everything cleaned up, put back, and done. I can maybe see some people using to much air, but the instructions tell you 3-4 psi, and to set the regulator, you have to plug the end of the hose, when you unplug the end it will read 0, but the instruction tell you that. Also, when I drilled, I stoped twice and blew the chips away, befor I went through, I put some grease on the drill bit, to catch the chips. Same when tapping, grease-up the tap, and it will catch most all chips. Then when your done, take a couple Q-tips, dab grease on there ends, and use them to nab any remaining chips. You do not have to have a degree in mech engr to do this. Once you drill through, you will be able to see the dowl pin, you use the supplied punch to make sure it is seated. I live in the CINCINNATI OHIO area, if you would like some help with this contact me. I have the kit for the 2nd generation, and can get the jig for the 1st. Please don't let this small pin cost you a large repair bill, if you have to spend your hard earned money on something, spend it on parts you would like to have, not on the ones from this needless repair.
