It sounds like the right place. It's a big acorn type nut about 7/8" or so, near the rear of the pump part where the govenor section starts.

The thing you are looking for is a blade which should center in the opening. If you don't have the plastic alignment plug, you could get close by using a mirror to look straight into the opening to see if the blade is centered.

Inside the nut, when first removed you will see a "metal nub" protruding out of the end of the nut/plug it is encased in white plastic. Remove with a small pair of pliers as necessary.

You will notice one way its hidden in the nut/plug and the other way it can protrude into the pump.

Perhaps, someone has been into the pump previously and didn't put it back. :(

The pump is set at the pump stand for a certain timing setting, then "locked" with the plug.

If the engine is at tdc the degrees of timing advance (BTDC) were factored in by the pump tech while on the stand (where it was locked).

So your not really at "zero" ? Am I making any sense? Hope so.

A bosch shop can fix you up with another plug, take them the Bosch part number.

Refill the pump with 3/4 of a qt of oil through the top of the pump, at the afc etc.

Hey I admire you, sounds like you did a reasonable hard repair job and it came out ok.

Good luck

Andy

Ok I found the nut, but it wont screw all of the way out because of the fuel shut off linkage. I took the solenoid off but the linkage on the pump keeps it from coming out. Has anyone had the same problem?

Here's a better pic. The bolt you need is the one labeled 'Access Plug' on the image.

Let me know if you need any other info, I've got the Cummins manual and an Air Force Technical Order for the Dodge Turbo Diesel trucks. (which is where this image came from)

That is the Governor Spring plug to use if you go throught the side.

Well I am back in working order, got the timing set last night. I started the engine and left it idling for a few minutes and I noticed oil dripping out from behind the harmonic balancer.

I went cummins and got another new crank seal. I guess when I took the cover off to set the timing I damaged the seal somehow. Just when I thought I was finished! Thanks for all of the help I received from everyone.
