Mine didn't fall out, but about too

The KDP in my 1997 was more than half way out when it was fixed (at 134,000 miles). Tried to do the drill n' jig method but drill hit the pin. Needed to remove the cover to locktie it and pound it in then finish the drill method.

Close call for me though.

Front cover cracked @ 57000. Had 18 days left on warranty. When front cover was replaced pin was still in but fell out when cover was removed. Taken care of at Dave's Diesel-Angola and paid for by Diamler-Chrysler. Can't say enough about the good work done by Rick and the crew at Dave's Diesel.

What do you consider a "failure"?? I pulled my cover to check the KDP after I first joined TDR since you where warning everyone about it (very greatful, many thanks) & found it over 3/4 out!! The oil around the pin was creating a seal keeping it in, I would consider that a failure. ??. (this was in a 97 model) Should I vote??

I guess a failure would be if the pin came all the way out. Hard to know if a pin that was found protruding a little has moved or was just never all the way in from the beginning.

If you feel like the pin most likely would have come out go ahead and vote.

So far this poll is confirming my suspicion that the '97 is most vulnerable.

Guess I only get to vote once here,eh.

Mine is a 98 and manufactured in 12/97. First KDP was at 32,503 and the second one was at 54,965. Its a shame DC or Cummins would not own up to the failures so those who own these trucks can get them fixed properly... ... Andy

I feel lucky for a change. My 98 was flush to protruding . 010" when I did it.

I did the tab method because I had a front seal leak and it had to come off anyway.

I lock tited it, tabbed it, and put it all back together.

97 truck

found my pin on the motor after it blow a 3in hole in the cover last week. waiting for one gasket and will be finished. i have alot of hrs in this. called cummins and told them my deal and that i had 156,000 miles on the truck. told me they would pay 45% of the cost of the fix, parts alone were 550. 00 from dealer. i have a fax number and a name any one interested drop me a pm.

Bill,

I contaminated your poll. I marked that I had a 96 before I realized that I should mark it only if I had a failure. I did not have a failure. I tabbed it at 56K and the pin was out about 3/16 of an inch.

Sorry

Bill,

I also contaminated your poll. I voted for a 96'. I have had the KDP put to rest but never had a problem. Maybe you could put an additional subject line up for us 96' owners? :)

Mike

RDRose, sorry about your kdp problem. I was surprised and happy to hear that Cummins will at least help with repair cost. Thanks for sharing.

When i took mine up to Enterprise Engines because of a oil leak getting worse every day I was sweating bullets! Those guys said they had never done one as close as it was on my 94. 185,000mi.:cool:

Bill. shouldn't this thread be 'sticked' in order to get more data? I need this to convince a few friends here in the North. Thanks! Dan

KDP killed

Blocked the pin today, I didnt hit anything with the drill so I hope I got it in time. . Decided it was the perfect time to replace the radiator hoses, damn, that was harder than doing the KDP jig! Those spring clamps are a bear, whats wrong with the old stainless steel hose clamps? I thought it might be a good time to replace my alternator too, but a phone call to the stealer for the price changed my mind (I'll wait till its dead).

Kudos to the Jig designer and all the guys who helped with instructions, and the extra tools, especially the fan hub wrenches, those were slick! I bought another bottle of Loctite and added it the kit before I sent it on.

BTW, I used illFlem's idea of 3/8" air hose to the dipstick, but I didnt feel ANY airflow out of the hole. I drilled and tapped anyway, hope I didnt get anything in the case. If I did where will those chips go ? Will the oil filter get'em or are they gonna plug up the cooling nozzles on my pistons???

Poll

Hi Bill,

Would be nice to have a check box on the poll for "had no problem yet" so percentage of failures could be calculated.

still runs

The KDP came out and didn't cause too much damage. I found the pin in the oil pan on the magnet along with a few slivers of metal. It just cracked the gear housing and truck still runs great.

I doubt that the KDP is a serious problem for the 91s or any of the 1st gens. Mine proballys came out for a number of reasons, my driving style, 212k miles and none have been easy on the truck. It has been a farm truck, construction truck, and now a farm truck again. The truck has been worked. I haven't heard of any comimg out besides mine on a first gen. Who knows?
