Hey guys,

My 96' has a oil leak in the front of the engine, which I beleive is the crankshaft seal. I haven't done the KDP fix either. My question is should I remove the front timing cover as to work on it on my bencg and the Tab the pin plus put the new seal in... ... ???? I had the front cover off of a couple of B series on heavy equiptment but have never dived into one in a truck YET... ! Any thought or view/exp. would be welcomed... . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have done 2 of the tabs!!! If you dont take the cover off to replace the seal. . you will be hating life big time!!!! If I were you, go the extra mile and tab the pin. It might take a couple hours longer but its well worth the work to prevent the damage that I have seen. If your were closer I would be glad to lend a hand...

I did my front seal at the same time as the KDP fix. You will find that putting in the new front seal will be more of a PIA than fixing the KDP. I would do them both at the same time!!! You have to remove the front cover anyway to get to the KDP, so while it is there on the bench.....

While you are at it, remove (one at a time), clean the bolts holding the gar case to the block, spray clean and blow dry the threaded holes, use blue Loctite on the bolts, torque to 18+ ft lb. At least retorque them, in particular the bolt next to the dowel, it is M8 x 1. 25 thread. With a tab, it should be around 25 mm long. If you remove the fan and shroud, you can work your way in there. Fan hub has left hand threads.

Don't be too surprised is your leak is actually a cracked case from a kdp failure rather than the seal. Seen it happen a few times because kdp damage is hidden till you take the fan pully housing off.

Definately!Kill two birds with one stone. The front crank seal does make a mess of things. Mine didnt really drip,it just kept everything rustproofed ;) Did mine both at once, tab and seal. About a 1/2 day job for me..... The KDP definately should be delt with ASAP. You listening huh?Dont put it off!Mine was out 1/4 inch.

Ahem, speaking from recent experience(yesterday). Take care of the KDP ASAP!!!!!!

Look at the thread a down from here titled "Gitchesum's Dowel Pin Damage" for some nasty looking pictures of what it does.

It's not that bad to do. We had the everything off in about and hour.

For the jig fix only these items need be removed, fan, fan pulley, fan bearing housing and coolant reservoir. The alternator needs to unbolted and pushed to the side as does the belt. Tools to remove the fan are included with most jig kits.

A hole is then drilled, tapped, countersunk and bolt inserted into the side of the gearcase while compressed air is applied to the no pressure side of the oil system to blow out chips. A long reach drill, tap, countersink as well as a bolt on jig to guide them in at the correct angle and depth are also included with the kit. Excellent instructions with pictures are also supplied.

R. ebel, just wanted to give ya a big thanks for posting hte tab dimensions. I searched and found them yesterday. Worked great!!

We tabbed two yesterday including mine. Couple more to go.

I tabbed my KDP today. I killed three birds with one stone, pin tabbed, oil seal changed, coolant change.

It sure is a relief to have it done, I should sleep a little better now. Pin was out between 1/4"-3/8". I don't know if it would have ever fallen out, but it sure tapped back in easy.

Thanks R. ebel for the tab and directions and everyone else who have given advice to help make my truck and enjoyable experience.
