Had my fuel filter changed today at my dealer and talked with the diesel tech about the dowl pin. He told me he just got through fixing one that came out and was lucky that it did not damage the gears. Had about 170K miles on it. Still cost $1,400. 00 to fix. Cover had good size hole in it and he had it repaired by a shop, at owners request, rather than getting a new one, about $500. 00 he said. I asked him if he could fix mine so it does not come out and he said he would. I told him that cummins had a part number for a tab available now but I don't have the part number anymore. I got it from the board about Feb this year and can't find it again doing a search. Can someone help me with this part number and has anyone had their dealership do this with this part. I'm not mechanically inclined enough to do this and I trust the dealership diesel tech, Brown Dodge, Devine TX. Always has taken good care of my truck. He didn't know about the part though and I told him I would get it for him. Obviously he hasn't used this part before. I sure would like to have this fixed. Thanks:)

You might check out if there are any BOMBing events near you. You might get it done in less than an hour for a few brews and a donation to CPFF. (jig creator)

You can get a kit from TSTProducts that has all the parts including a tab. Also instructions on how to do the job.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I called TST Products and talked with them. Sounds like they have all the seals etc needed. I think I'm going to order the kit and have the Dealer install for me. According to them it shouldn't take no more than 2 or 2-1/2 hours to do. So at least I know how long anyway. This truck is still running so nice that I want to keep it awhile longer. This will make me feel a whole lot better. :D

I have just done what you are about to do. I ordered the kit from TST and had the local dealer do the install. Dealer quoted $171. 00 labor. When I picked it up they said they used a Cummins gasket rather than the tube of stuff that came with the kit. Total with tax, ect. was $220. I had them replace hoses which I brought from the parts house.

The mech said my dowel pin had worked out 1/16" to 1/8", so I'm glad I had it done. My 96 has 83,000 miles.

I've got it scheduled to be done on Monday, 1 Dec. Provided of course that the kit from TST comes in by then. They were processing on 21 Nov so I should get it on Friday. The dealer quoted me $180. 00, 2-1/2 hours of labor. So this sounds about right with what you were charged from your dealership. I sent him an e:mail just now and told him I would prefer that he use the cummins gasket in place of the sealer sent with the kit. I do remember when I was talking to the guy at TST that he did mention that the 97 Dodge had a gasket but I think he said the newer ones didn't so they include the tube of sealer. I wonder why not a gasket. Anyway, I feel better with the gasket. I'm getting ready to drive to Jax, Fl middle of Dec and really wanted to get this done. It seems I always find myself wondering when the pin is going to fall out. Got to do this for sanity. And since I am mechanically challenged :{ I have to pay someone to do this. But it will be worth every penny to have the piece of mind that this built in self destruct mechanism is fixed. :D

There were 2 kits available when I ordered on 21 Nov 03. I must have gotten 1 of them and I am going to call them tomorrow to make sure because I have it scheduled to be fixed on Monday. He did say that he was getting more stuff in shortly to do more kits.
