Well since I have a bad oil leak coming from behind my gear case I am going to have to pull the entire thing off and repair it. I know I am going to get another case to stop the KDP. Where can I get one? While I'm at it what other things should I replace in there? Water Pump? Power Steering? and how much are these items worth? I a going to order all the parts on Monday so any replies are appreciated.

I have read that article thanks for the info Joe. I am having a Cummins shop perform the work. I just wanted to know where I could get the new cover and if any other Items were worth replacing while they are in there.

Sorry to here about the bad luck . I have the dreaded and feared 97 model. I am hoping the Cummins dealer here will start realizing this as a problem, and doing a fix. You don't happen to be in the Daytona Beach area. RJ

No, Sorry I am in NY. My KDP may or may not have caused the leak. It is at the 5 oclock position just above the pan. If it were'nt for KDP I would probably play around with external glues or fixes, but since I know about KDP I might as well fix the leak the right way and not have to worry anymore.

WRICHARDS:

From what I've seen the KDP when it lets go will take the front of the timing off. Or at lest put a hole in it. I saw a 93 that had trouble with this, and the engine quit. Really made a mess. Where is your keak. I had one at the timing cover and tightened up the 10 mm bolts. I have just installed an Airsep unit that is supposed in help in this area. I did this cause of the 18 hour time for the replacement of the TG cover. So far it seem to work.

What I'm saying is if the pin lets go you will have more than a leak.

Good luck.

The usual thing that happens when the TDP lets go is a crack in the gear case under the idler pulley and the TDP ends up in the oil pan. It can break other things, but usually it doesn't. Even the gear case cover is normally not damaged. The link in my post above shows this situation. BIG HAIRY deal to replace the gear case!

Here's what you'll need. Updated gear case, 2-gaskets (one for the case and one for the cover), a new front main seal and a new dowel pin. I purchased all of the parts, for the truck in the link above, for roughly $250. This will give you an idea how much money you'll be spending simply on labor. It wouldn't surprise me to see you spend $1250 just on labor. I would suggest finding a member in your area who has done this before. You'll spend a fraction of the cost by letting them do the work. I have done a couple of these jobs for about 1/2 of what the shops want to charge. It's a long job but NOT worth $1500. If you can't find a member then shop around a little and compare labor costs,... you know what the parts will cost ($250).
