I am looking for a jig for 1st gen engines. I have on for a 2nd gen but get different answers on if it will work on the older engines.
 
In 2003 I borrowed one from Bob Beauchaine. You could look him up and try a pm to him.

I think I may also have some drawings to make one. If you get that deserate, send an e mail to me at

-- email address removed -- and I can reply with what I have. Maybe by seeing the drawings and measuring yours you can decide if it will work.

Why pin it when your 5 minutes from tabbing it. And checking those gear case bolts in side. It was considered a temporay repair any way. Maybe the pin has worked its way out enough that you can't pin it, and when you put through the screw it pushes the pin on out?? Opps. Your choice. Do a search on here, may have to dig deep to find the info.
 
x2 on what MLee said. Just did the tab on my newly aquired 93'. Only 130k miles and the dowel pin hadn't budged but two of the case bolts i backed out with my fingers. It really is a simple and straight forward job and worth every bit.
 
Double ditto MLee. I had loose bolts. It really wasn't hard at all... . well, mainly because Greenleaf and Philip did all the real work and kept me far enough away to keep me from breaking anything important.

I still can't believe I had to keep rewashing that one last bolt at the solvent bath. It looked clean to me. :-laf
 
I'd pull the cover also. Better to be safe than sorry.

I did my 92 and 97 and the pins hadn't moved and the bolts were tight, but I tabbed the pins and pulled the bolts and loctited them anyways. I have seen engines that the bolts came out of, not a pretty sight, and expensive too.
 
MPalachuck, I agree with everyone that you should really consider forgetting about the drill jig and pull the cover and tighten/locktite the case bolts. I did and found loose bolts and a cracked fuel gear.

Ive done three KDP's so far and all the case bolts were loose. I would encourage you to tab or stake it. Staking it wont cost you anything but the timing cover gasket set. My 2 cents.
 
Harold Bowers can make these jigs - he made mine. That being said I doubt that he would make one for any one. The reason I say this is because I saw the results of the damage done by the case bolts. He was working on a 1st gen that had died on the road. At first the thought was a a KDP that came out, but it turned out to be a case bolt that backed out and jamed between the cam drive gear and crank drive gear. What he showed me was a cam broken into 3 pieces plus bent push rods - the engine survived. That kind of damage will ruin your day - probably 3 or 4 hundred miles from home. I know he will not do another KDP without pulling the front cover.
