I personally would never use the jig method. So many times the cover needs to come off anyway as there are loose bolts inside and out and the seal and or cover are usually leaking. Also if you have a loose bolt inside and it falls out (not common but has happened) you can have similar or worse damage. I have done about 6 of these things and the bolts inside and out are never all up to torque (18 ft. lbs. ).
Standard procedure for me is to pull the 4 bolts inside the case, clean, loctite and torque. There is a 5th in there but it can't be pulled due to the cam gear being in the way. I bend a wrench and sometimes slide the cam out a little to get this one tight.
When I tabbed my truck years ago (my first one) I didn't touch the bolts inside other then the tab bolt. Years and many miles later I had a leak between the gear case and block so I pulled the cover and tightened things up in there, which stopped the leak.
