At one time there was a kit circulating using a tap and bolt to secure the kdp. Is it still around and how do you get on the waiting list. Or is this not done any more? Any input is greatly appreciated.

The jig fix is still around. If you post the state you live in. The keepers of the jigs will know how to respond.

Now on the other side of the coin. Most everyone of use that have pulled a timing cover off has found loose bolts on the inside of the cover and the cam retainer plate. A KDP falling out will crack the cover most of the times. A cam plate retaining bolt will snap off the end of the cam. I would reccommed pulling the cover off and check all the bolts inside of it.

Go to the cummins shop and ask for a 3958017 it is a real nice tab to keep the kdp in,it is about $2. Pull the 2 bolts out behind the cam gear clean them and the holes with brakekleen and use red locktight and put em back at 18 ft lbs no tighter. There are 4 bolts in the oil pump(bottom left as u face engine) dont tighten them more than spec 18ft. lbs or itl cost you 200 bucks for new oil pump, dont ask. Use a punch and bfh to tapp the kdp in to seat it and use the tab. There may be 1 more cover bolt inside but i cant remember for sure. Have fun and good luck, My 98. 5 the pin was out about 3/8 of an inch out, but not any more.
