Now that I have the instructions for doing the fix and talked to cumminsgetme on Sat. I feel good enought to fix it, what I needed was a backup list of parts to order, seals, gaskets ect. Not the part numbers jsut a list if you please! Sorry for the repeat post on KDP's.

Jim

Gotta have a long screw to replace the one next to the tab to fasten it in place. I didn't measure the one I used so if some knows the size please let us know. Red loctite for the tab screw.

Jim,

the part numbers for the gaskets are as follows:

Gear cover gasket: 3918673

Front seal service kit: 3904353

the oil fill tube gaskets do not always need to be replaced, but if yours are leaking the large gasket for the oil filler connection to the gear case cover is: 3903475

If its time to run the valves and you want to replace the valve cover gaskets (most of the time the gaskets can be reused several times) the part number is: 3902666

The o-ring numbers for the hold-down bolts is: 3910824

I like permatex #2 as a sealant. Its cheap and works great.

When I made my washer or tab up I used a thick piece of stock (all I could scrounge up) The bolt ended up being a tad too short for my comfort. The longer bolt was M8x1. 25x25mm. Slightly longer than the 17mm bolt that was in there. It was a high grade bolt at least grade 8. It was flanged as well. If your tab is from thin stock you might be ok with the original bolt.

Ive heard a strap wrench is handy for removing the fan. Course ya prolly allready got it off for the winter huh?

Some of the stuff above you will prolly not need. I get kinda anal about stuff being right and sometimes go overboard.

Bring your checkbook or credit cards to Cummins. They aint cheap!

Thanks for the parts list Don, I need to do this also.

Thanks again for the springs I love driving the truck even more now, what a difference.

Thanks for that list, It's a little more that's I was looking for but thanks anyway. I will make my tab out of 10 or 12 guage(have both)

If your pin has started to move, hopefully you'll be able to drive it back in with a center punch. They don't always drive back in easily. Chris was not able to get his pin flush (also couldn't pull it) and resorted to leaving the pin out a little (maybe a 1/16 but was still able to tab it). Ditto on the new bolt. We checked Don's using the existing bolt and found that only two threads were holding the tab.

Cord,

I think there is a little variation in the gear case depending on the year. My pin protruded a little and hammering did not make it flush. I ground a little place on the back of the tab to allow clearance for the pin. This allowed the tab to pull up snug to the gear case and still block the KDP. Some others have mentioned this as well.

Joe

Your probably right. All the pin's I have done drove in flush. Maybe I just haven't run across one that protrudes a little (Chris's??).

Mine was nearly all the way out. I reached in there with a pair of needle nosed pliers and it fell out as soon as I touched it with them. I never even pulled on it. Just touching the pin caused it to fall free.

It seems, from what I read here, that the 97s were most at risk. That is what I have and the last message I got from Brandon says that the California KDP jig is on its way to me. I'll start as soon as I get it and report back.

I Put it back for some dumb reason. You dont gotta.

Of course I would not have went to all the trouble to make the tab and get a longer bolt if I left it out:D

Don~

Don,

It's a good thing you used the tab fix. Just think what would have happened if you used the jig fix. It would have knocked the KDP out without you knowing it. That would have been a lot of fun the next time you started up!

for cryin out loud if your pin falls out while tryin to get it back in then LEAVE IT OUT..... it was only used in mfg as a locator. as i understand it... . good luck... . this job should not take too much money. and cummins jessup did mine in 1. 5hrs for $150. good luck... scott.

Let me get this 100% straight... .

If the pin is on its way out... . we can just take it out and not even worry about making a tab and driving it back in where it needs to be??!! Seems like a good option to me.

However, if it is still in there and has no signs of coming out anytime soon... we should still tab it, or go through the risks of further invasive surgery which could leave you worse off than you originally started.

All this fuss over one little pin... .
