I'm in the process of repairing KDP damage on a 98. I'll order my parts from Cummins NW tomorrow but I need a relatively complete list of what I'm gunna need and about what it'll cost. My timing gear case is wasted so I'll start the list with that but what else do I need for gaskets, seals, etc. ? TIA

-Scott

until you get it torn apart you won't know what all you will need-you may need some gears as they get munched and other things-gaskets, front cover, the stop to keep the pin from coming out again are musts... -chris

You should not need a KDP tab because the new gear case is stepped. You will want to make sure you get the right one. See a picture of it here: http://www.flex.net/~triplem/new/dowelpin.htm

You will need at least all the other parts for a KDP fix plus the gasket for the gear case.

Here are the Cummins part numbers:

CM 3918673 $19. 57 Timing Cover Gasket

CM 3804899 $26. 89 Front Crankshaft Oil Seal

CM 3900257 $1. 60 Dowel Pin

I'm sure there are other gaskets needed, but don't know for sure.

Thanks for the help. All my gears are going to run but there is a 3" long piece broken out of the gear case. How much is Cummins going to nail me for that thing?

On the list right now:

Gear case

new dowel pin

block to case gasket

case to cover gasket

front main seal

Anything else? Is there a seal on the injector pump or vac/oil pump that should be replaced while it's out? Will all the valve cover gaskets be reuseable? This is such a great site!

I think the gear case is in the $200 - $300 range. Those prices above are a few years old so they might have changed. I don't know about what other gaskets you may need. I fixed mine as soon as I heard about the problem so I've never had to fix a failure.

OK, here's the list

Sorry I took so long posting this but I wanted to get it all put together to be sure my parts were right.

KDP repair parts needed:

Gear housing #3920519 $205. 89

Gear housing gasket #3931351 $17. 74

Gear cover gasket #3918673 $23. 05

Front main seal kit #3904353 $27. 70

Timing pin seal #3913994 $1. 30

Timing pin holder seal #3915772 $1. 09

Timing pin keeper #3904849 $. 50

Vac\steering gasket #3915772 $4. 64

Inj pump O ring seal #3926722 $3. 89

New dowel pin #3900257 $1. 88

Use this list if replacing the entire gear case. If you cover was damaged it will be listed as the following:

Timing gear cover #3923898 Price unknown

If doing the tab fix you should only need the gear cover gasket and front main seal kit from the list above.

I hope this help you all.

Disclaimer: The above part numbers and prices are valid for a 98 model 12 valve Cummins if parts are purchased from Cummins Northwest. They may not be correct for every application.

Gear housing part number

Does your new gear housing have the "stepped" DP hole? I ask because my brother just bought a new housing, part number 3936256. This housing has the stepped DP hole.

Yup, it had the stepped or "blind" hole as Cummins calls it. You're number may fit a diffrent year?

-Scott

Thank you. The truck in question is a 1995. His housing is an updated one. I like to keep a record of any/all part numbers. Many times a new part solves the problem, but the poster does not post the part number.
