Crash,
I drive right by Cummins NW on Swan Island in Portland on my way to work. I'll swing in and talk to them about the KDP and see what they have worked on. I will not have time today, but this week for sure.

Crash,
I mentioned on my "venting" thread that I had asked the service manager at one of our local Dodge dealerships if he had ever encountered a pin failure at any time in the past and he said "no". He's been there almost 10 years. The next time I see the guy who services our emergency generator at work (a Cummins 8. something liter... the big brother to our 5. 9's), I'll ask him the same question. It will be a very interesting statistic to know, won't it?

Upon removal of the gearcase cover on my '97 it was discovered the KDP had moved 3/16" forward out of it's proper location. Could not push it back in by hand, had to tap it back into it's bore with a small hammer. Just a WAG, but I think the KDP is prone to moving due to thermal cycling when the pin is not a good tight press fit in its bore.

on my 95 the pin was out about 1/8 or 3/16" and I tapped in in very lightly with a small hammer... #ad

North Coast Auto in Eureka has fixed two of them. Both were very expensive since the pin fell out and made a big mess. On the other hand, they do sell a lot of trucks so the rate of failure is pretty small.

I feel a lot more confortable since I installed a tab in mine as insurance in case of a loose pin.

I was reading waynep's rant thread about the KDP and it's gotten me curious. I'd like to get a poll going of who's had a KDP incident or found a loose pin when they did a KDP repair. If anyone can get some hard numbers from a service facility of how many times they've seen this problem, post that too.

I'm really curious of just how 'limited' this problem is... #ad

I stopped by Cummins Northwest, Inc. , in Bend OR yesterday to ask about KDP. The service managers name is Ray Aplegate and he's been there a while (1-800-688-03360). He told me they've fixed 3 or 4 of them. All broke the housing. One broke the cam shaft. He thought they were all older models, 91 or 92 but wasn't sure and said they haven't seen one laterly.

It's the best info I could . He seemed a little hesitant to give more specific details.
