An engineer at work just bought a 99 QC 4X4 3500. It does have the 53 block but the price and 56k mileage was right, a real cream puff.

I'm just looking for info on what year Cummins changed the gear cover.

Is the new cover dimpled at the dowel pin?

Any info would be appreciated. Mike

PS. I did a search but my eyes started to bleed... . Too much info... :-laf

AKMAC,

Yes, the new cover is dimpled. What is unknown is when the new cover began to be installed.

My advice would be: Don't chance it! For just a few dollars (compared to a KDP failure) you can eliminate the possibility. Either the tab (and loc-titing the rest of the front cover bolts) or jig will do the trick.

I do have a jig you can use for just the cost of shipping. PM me if you would like to use it.

Godspeed,
Trent

Thanks for the reply Trent, I'll let Don know tomorrow and go from there.

He's the second convert to 5. 9 I've had. Mike

I had a bad from main seal leak on my '99, so I had to remove the timing cover. I checked it while I was there & the dowel was all the way in & had the cover with the lip on it. I staked it for good measure anyway.
