So I finally decided to use my TST KDP fix kit that's been sitting around for a couple years and I pulled the front cover off and couldn't use the tab under the bolt trick! In all the pics I've seen of the KDP the gear housing is flush from that bolt hole over to the KDP. My gear housing was raised around the KDP hole so I couldn't put the tab under the bolt. Was this the fix that cummins made? I thought I read somewhere they didn't fix this problem until sometime in 1999 and my truck was made 10/98. The KDP hadn't moved at all in 219k so for now I just put it back together. Am I ok or is there something I still should have done?

I had the same suprise when I cracked open the case. Plus, there was no info tag on the case cover no more. And many calls and posts later, still unable to uncover the mystery engine. Possible the KDP did its thing before I got the truck... who knows.

Anyway, I ended up staking the KDP as a fix with a center punch. I think Andy Redmond also is a "staker" proponent. Or you possibly could fab up a tab with a bend in it.

I did stake it for good measure. I thought about a dab of red loctite in the kdp hole for extra measure. I'm the second owner of the truck and knew the first owner fairly well, he never mentoned any engine work of that nature so who knows.

You lucked out and got one of the new style housings. My 98. 5 was flush and the pin was out about 3/8th of an inch, and my neighbors was like yours, kinda raised and a tad bit smaller then the pin.

You are OK, the one you described is the new updated case. Somewhere along the time when yours was assembled was when they "fixed" the problem, so it's most likely stock. New case=no KDP falling out. :DOo.

just got through tearing apart my 92 to check the problem and it has the new case also the guy i bought it from has had for 13 years of its 15 year life span he says he has never had any engine work done . any ideas

I had the same thing happen when I pulled the cover on my 01... . I knew it wasn't that likely to affect that year, but I had heard trucks as late as 2002 were affected, so I wanted to be safe. After a bunch of head scratching, I figured I had the new case.

Peace of mind cost a couple hours of work, a crank seal, tube of RTV, and a new gasket.
