At dyno day last week i talked to lsfarms about the kdp issue in the 2nd gen trucks.

My truck a 98. 5 i didnt know this was an issue for me,,,till then. Last night i pulled the truck down and the kdp was out as far as the bolt head beside it!!

While at cummins today to get new seals, I mentioned to the parts guy about a tab,

guess what they have a real nice tab for this, it is part #3958017 and it is under 2 bucks. I put it in, real slick.

The way i understand it is the timing case was upgraded in 99 but some of the trucks clear to 2001 MAY have the unsholdered case. :--)

The bolts for the inside of the case and all bolts outside are to be torqued to 18ft lbs.

This is just a heads up for all 24v owners who might not know this is an issue for them.

Can one tell if the timing case is the newer one by looing at the outside of it, or by part#?

My '99 has 80k on it and I've often wondered about the KDP.

Lordsman, you have two trucks that can lose their dowel pins. If you happen by my place, I can show you gear cases that have been "modified" by errant pins.

whats involved in installing the tabs to lock down the KDP ??

Been reading about this for some time, and given that I've got 115k on my 1998. 5 it'd be nice to fix once and for all. Can somebody summarize whats involved in adding this tab (how much engine tear down involved ??)

TIA,

Ralph-

Glad you got it done

Dirk, I'm glad you got the dowel pin before it got you!!.

I thought the cut-off year was 2000 !! Now I'm worried about my '01. 5. I may try my bore-sight and see if I can see into the gear case well enough to see the dowel pin.

RHeron, go to the 12v forum and read the 'sticky' about the KDP, I think there are directions there. Basically you have to remove the fan, the belt, the crank pulley, the fan bearing support and then the front cover, the dowel pin is easily accesed behind the cover, the job takes me about 1. 5 hours usually.
