Can u see the pin without taking the cover off it looks like someone has been in there dont want to tear apart if al ready done
 
If you take the fan pulley/crank sensor off and remove all the bolts on the top of the timing cover you might be able to flex the timing cover enough to see the kdp with good light and mirror.
Once you have gone that far it's really not much more work to remove the crank damper.
 
I have wondered if a bore scope could peak in their and see... . pull the oil cap and see if you see anything poking around.
