KDP Shavings

Do we need to worry about shavings in the gears from drilling into housing? Or do you use the grease on the drill trick. Since it is so hard to get a jig I'm thinking about making my own. Working in Tool and Die I could do that.

We just had a KDP party and did 5 trucks. CPFF's jig comes with a machined aluminum adaptor that allows you to hook a regulated air source to the road draft tube. Basically we hooked 2 psi of shop air to the road draft tube and when you drill the hole, the shavings blast back at you. Once the hole was drilled, we icreased the pressure slightly while doing the countersinking and tapping steps.

I remember one of the fellows here pulled his cover after drilling and tapping and found no chips using the air pressure system. rubberneck is right, the chips blow out while working. I have never had any luck with the grease method.

In the time it takes you to fabricate a good jig you could tab the KDP and also tighten (if need be) the bolts that are in there.

I had a problem (popped the tappet cover gasket from too much air pressure) when I did the KDP fix. Drilled and tapped anyway. Next oil analysis showed abnormal aluminum, iron and chromium. The analysis after that showed normal wear metals.



I have concluded that the inevitable aluminum chips in the front gear train caused no permanent damage. Of course, no chips is best!



My advice from experience, don't plug up your breather tube, keep the air pressure down and you will be fine.

GAmes is right - you'll have to take the cover off anyway to figure out how to make the jig so that it drills in the right spot.

The NW KDP jig has an adapted hose that slides over the dipstick tube. Air pumped into the engine can escape thru the breather as a safety. Worked great for us. I'm not sure shavings will cause problems anyway. I'm thinking they would be eliminated by the oil filter before they could do any harm. The worst that could happen is they go through the gears in the front case falling to the sump and then into the filter. I have yet to hear of someone having a problem from the jig. Slick, easy and simple.

I would like to point out that any shavings that do manage to get into the oil system will pass through the oil pump befor befor being contained in the oil filter.
