I was out looking over the truck, examining the kdp situation and trying to figure out what route I was going to take to stop the kdp from claiming another victim. I got to looking where it is,how it is mounted and the revilation came to me. (I searched archives on this but found nothing). Since anyone who does proper timing on these engines doesn't use the timing pin,why not just eliminate the darn thing? If you put the tab inside the cover the pin is useless anyway,so why not take it out?It appears to be held on by 2 small machine bolts (T27 torx?). Then fab a blank cover(like a fuel pump blockoff plate on a gasser),put a little sealer on the back side of the new blankoff plate, locktite the bolts and wala, you're done. Ido realize the space limitations of getting to the area, but could/has this been done or tried yet?Just looking for some input. Glenn.

If only it was that easy. The picture below show the dowel pin behind the screw. That pin is located behind the timing cover on the front of the engine, behind the fan clutch assembly. You can only get to it from the front and the pin is pressed in to engine block.

BTW, this also shows how the CPFF fix works.

Glenn,

The KDP and the timing pin are two different things. The KDP accurately positions the gear case and prevents it from shifting.

Joe as you probably have read I like your method, it was way too easy and those are some real good instructions(with laughs) Thanks again!

Man John, Now I feel bad about changing the link on ya yesteray.

The new link is www.gitchesum. f2s.com/kdp.htm

Just copy and paste into your sig, shouldn't be a problem.

On Edit: Never Mind John, I made another link so your hyperlink will work like it is.

O. K. so I was way off base with this one. Where is the closest jig,and how soon can I get one. I'm almost affraid to drive this truck;)before I can get the thing fixed.

KDP REPAIR TIME?

How long does this repair take, using the jig? How do you know if the pin has started coming out, and the dreaded question? What do you do, if the pin has started coming out???

Ron,

That's one of the reasons I don't like the jig method. If you tab it you can tell what the situation is since you have to take the gear case cover off. There could be loose screws as well as a loose pin. If you have the gear case cover off you just drive the pin back in it's hole.

JoeG:

With the tab method does that mean the front of the truck comes off? Seems like it would for the timing gear cover.

No, the front stays on. Actually, a lot of the work required for the jig or the tab is the same. The difference is that for the tab you have to take the crank pully and gear case cover off.

The front has to come off if you are going to pull the cam shaft out to get a busted gear case off. That's what happens if the KDP gets you before you get it.

Not necessary to pull the front apart. I took off the fanbelt, oil fill tube, fan bracket for the fan pulley. Never even broke into the cooling sys. Little tight but possible. Air ratchet makes it easier (and faster)

Last week I ordered the necessary gasket and seal to do the tab method and did the procedure this last Saturday morning. Get this, while inside the gear case,I decided to check the other bolts that hold the back half of the case on and found one of the bolts only finger tight!!!Had I done this with the jig,I still could have had the catastrophy of busting the case. I then went to the closest gas station and bought lottery tickets(I won $10 but not the jackpot). Anyway,I used locktite on everything when putting it all back together. Again I must say--THANK YOU JOE!!Your knowledge is worth the annual membership alone. Man am I happy. :D

Mike, here's some pictures of a jig fix, it's little hard to see but the retaining bolt is only about 1/8" from the KDP http://www.gitchesum.f2s.com/kdp.htm Notice that the drilling/tapping chips are only on the outside of the case. Also shown is the bolt that a tab fix uses. Note: the cover doesn't come off for the jig fix, it is only off for the picture. What keeps the tab from rotating if the bolt comes loose?

Bill,

I made mine long enuff that it stuck up into the recess in the side of the gear case. It can't rotate.
