Just finished tabbing my KDP. (50,394 miles) Job is not bad. Hardest part was getting the new crankshaft seal installed in the cover. I might have used a four letter word or two. Couldn't get it to start in straight to save my life. Probably will leak as many times as I had to drive it in then pry it out. That way I can get more practice with a new seal! Old seal didn't have the dust seal that the new one comes with. My KDP was still recessed in the gear case about a 16th of an inch so I assume it hadn't moved. Bought a M8 X 20mm bolt and loctited the tab in there. I did remove the fan and shroud, also the drivers side battery and battery tray. Getting the windshield washer bottle off the shroud required this in my truck. Look carefully as to how the tachometer pickup is routed it took me a few tries to get it routed back correctly so that it cleared the fan pulley and the belt. Fan mount has to come off and this requires removal of the small bolts that are in a circle around the fan nut. I recommend that you break these loose while the fan belt is still on. They shouldn't be that tight but they were quite snug in my truck.

Check out my post and a few others for tips, such as we(mechanic/I) put the seal in while out of truck.



Windshield washer bottle should of been easy to pop off shroud and remove all connections while shroud was attached to radiator.



But it really doesn't matter how you did it just as long as you get to the same conclusion as others ( there is no way that kdp is coming out).

My windshield washer bottle was a real PITA. I finally said "To hell with it: and went under the truck with a large pry bar. Luckily it didnt break it.

My seal was real difficult to start straight also.

If I was able to eliminate the above two items, It would have cut the time in half.

When I tabbed mine I tried for about 15 minutes to put the seal in the cover. It was all but impossible. I then put the cover in the sun and the seal in the freezer. It was summer and the sun heated the cover real good (black side up toward the sun). I tried again and the seal went in pretty easy in about 2 minutes. If it is winter or cloudy, I would put the cover in the oven at about 200 degrees. That is about what it felt like the cover was at sitting in the summer sun.

The Patriot (Eric), any one else,

Windshield washer bottle removal (it's easier with an extra set of hands). The white tabs need to be pulled forward a little so they clear the bracket when coming up.

The bubbles (plastic) on back of the bottle hold it in postion they need to be pressed inward and upward at same time (probably better if bottle was half empty or more) ) this where two extra hands come in handy, they can move the tabs outward when they reach top of bracket or you can put something thin behind tabs to hold them out enough to clear bracket. (small - screwdrivers, scrapers or putty Knifes).



My mechanic had a seal installer= big round metal disc with round long straight handle on top/middle to pound on. It didn't work seal kept going in cockeye. Maybe a smaller one would of worked.

I pried the nipples out with a long screw driver and then slipped a wide blade putty knife (actually used for sheet rock mud) behind it. Then the coolant and washer tank lifted out pretty easy.

I have one of those seal drivers with an assortment of sizes. None that fit the front seal of course. If I have to do that one again, I will try the hot/cold solution Bob Horrell suggested.

My washer bottle was made by Dr Frankenstein. The button you have to push is sticking out too far for any average human to push in enough to make it slip out. I was going to torch it when I got it out, and push it in a bit, but I thought I'd never have that %&^$# thing off again. WRONG!!!

I forgot the bolts on the fan shroud, in my haste to get this thing done.

I got the ol lady out to help me the second time. Came out with less hassle that time.
