Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) KDP tools needed??

I am about to tab my KDP tomarrow at a buddies house. What tools besides sockets and such will be needed????

Nothing real special, you'll need a 36 mm wrench. I used a 12" crescent wrench (Metric, of course that I had to grind a bit on one of the jaws to fit the fan nut, and don't forget it is LEFT hand thread. You'll need something to hold the part behind, I used a 12" chain wrench.



Other than that, a few metric sockets and you're on your way. Oo.

According to the instructions in issue 40 (latest) of the mag, you can get the fan mount off without unscrewing the fan. The screw that looks impossible to get to isn't afterall. See page 149.

Take a look here for a good run-down of things. A couple of things that will make the job easier is to use a drill press to seat the seal into the front cover. Some members have put the seal into the freezer to shrink it, and heated the cover to expand the hole. The seal is a TIGHT fit.



Neil used some metric bolts that he cut the heads off of as guide pins. These work well to support the cover when you reassemble things. This is highly recommended, since it supports/guides the cover into the correct position while you are sliding the new seal over the end of the crankshaft.



The plastic seal installation guide tool supplied with the seal kit works great.

One other interesting development. I bought all the seals from Cummins, not aftermarket. The instructions included with the kit show the seal being replaced with the cover in place, IOW you don't have to remove the cover to replace. Don't know if this is a new development or not. It's not that difficult.

Just wanted to say thanks to you guys for the info. The different way to take the fan off was especially helpful (the four bolts for the whole assembly vs the 36mm nut) All went well and hopefully the oil leak is fixed now also!! The KDP had come out about "3/8 from flush. I was amazed at how easy it was to TAP it back recesed. Thanks again
