Which Method Do You Prefer?

If Anyone is contemplating doing the KDP I would strongly suggest that you do the TST repair instead of the Jig method. 1- If you do the jig repair you will probably have to remove the timing cover anyway to drive the dowel pin back into the block, so do one step instead of two. My son and I did my 96,12V and his 99,24V. The 96 dowel pin was out flush with timing case,did tab TST repair and put everything back together and started on his 99. On his we found that the KDP had moved out about 1/16" past the back of the timing case toward the gears,so he drove it back in and did the tab repair. I would strongly suggest to all you procrastinators to do the repair $50. 00 is alot cheaper then $1000. 00+. The thaught of doing the job is worse then doing it. :D
 
Sorry to hear you had bad luck with the two that you did.....



I have not had any issues with CPFF's jig fix.



I venture to guess that I have been involved with at least a dozen trucks... and none of the KDP's had even budged.



CPFF's jig is the only way to fly in my book.

Just Do It!

This why all of us new subscribers love this place! You get multiple suggestions, and even offers of help. I can`t begin to thank the NW Bomber gang enough for getting me started down the right path. Many thanks again to both Harold and Bob for "jigging" my KDP. It does seem unnecessary to rnr the front cover, unless the pin has moved. I vote for the jig . Don
 
I've personally done over 40 jig fixes and have only had to remove the cover twice, both '97s.

The NW jig has done well over 200 fixes, only four people have reported the pin too far out, that doesn't mean they all have told me though.

Quick, easy no problem with the pin coming out.



It's as simple as getting on the list, waiting, getting the jig, doing it in an evening in the driveway or garage (need air) then sending it off to the next guy. SIMPLE ;)



Never done the tab but from what I read if the jig works (pin still in) it's alot quicker and easier.

KDP easy way or full inspection

Pulling the cover lets you see the whole picture. How do you know if your pin fell out and is just riding on the gear? It has happened to others on this board. The jig method is running blind.

Some of my bolts were loose inside the cover.
 
Is it really possable that the pin has fallen out and not be able to tell through the 1/4 - 20 theaded hole. I have two 12ers with around 200k on them , one 97' & one 98'

If the 1" screw misses the dowel pin are you you saying it could have completly fallen out? If it is out & I pull the cover should I put it back in the hole?? or leave it out? I'm asking because I'm on the jig list & getting it in a couple weeks. So anybody that is holding on to the jigs please send them on their way-----I'm getting nervous :rolleyes:
 
I don't recall anyone saying they've found a pin that was missing without some damage or very apparent noise. Sounds like dragging a screwdriver along a chainlink fence. Some folks have caught a loose pin by the noise before any damage was caused, usually find it sitting on top of the cam gear.

If you really want to check when using a jig an o-ring removal tool with a 90° end (or a dental probe) will allow you to feel around for an empty hole.



The truth is that most pins are in as far as they were when they left the factory, even if not totally flush, and are never going to come out.

You don't want to be one of the few who has a problem though, either way of preventing it is the best.
 
Bill's right. Only a small percentage of these pins will have moved enough to cause a problem with using the jig. Problem is that those pins are likely to cause a BIG scene because they have a flair for the dramatic. There is no wrong way to address the KDP in the 12V's that are likely to be affected except to ignore it. This is as cheap as insurance gets when it comes to preventing $$$$ damage to the engine. One way or another, DO IT.
 
I have opted for the tab fix. Joe G. is the man with the plan. I have had the seal and gasket for some time, just too lazy.



After discovering the head gasket leak, I decided to do both at the same time.



I discovered a little moisture on the bottom of the radiator :confused: . I intended to replace both radiator hoses, so after pulling the head I decided to pull the radiator for a closer look, and it would make it easier to do the pin.



Well, the head has a crack :mad: and the radiator is shot :mad: . In the process of pulling the head I broke the water temp sending unit :mad::{ :mad: . The good news is that the pin has not moved Oo. :rolleyes: , but it will be tabbed :cool: .



If anyone knows where I can pickup a water temp sending unit (new or used) for a 1996, please advise.





Please don't misunderstand, I am not complaining. Just think of all the experience I am getting.

P. S. I may stand corrected, but I think TDR member Joe G. came up with the "tab repair", although several people now have the Tabs for sale.

I didn't come up with the tab fix idea. What I did was write down what I did to do the job. Page 148 in the latest issure of the TDR mag has how to do it. TST Products is selling a kit with all the parts needed for a reasonable price.
 
talk of the pin moving out and havin to remove cover to tap it back in? well w/ the jig from harold, -- email address removed -- the angle of the hole and the fact that the hole is larger makes it possible to massage the pin back into place.



harold has performed many kdp fixes at club events and a large numbr have moved out a ways. no prob gettin em back where they belong

TST kit for KDP

I installed the TST kt and in the process found the pin was out about a quarter inch. I also got numerous leaks stopped in the process, so felt this was a good way to go.



As with all their products with which I am familiar, they had really thought out the makeup of the KDP repair kit.
