how many folks out there really know that their 89-00 pickup has the kdp? did cummins send recalls to these unfortunates. there is

a lot of folks with 12v's in my area

so, how long does it take for the little terror (dowel pin) to fall out?

The KDP is not officially a safety problem so no recall. A failure is not associatied with any time or milage numbers. Just fails whenever it gets ready.

Joe, do you know exactly what years are affected by this? After spending the last week fixing one I intend to be educated on the subject. My understanding was 94 through early 98 12 valves.

The early 24v are affected by the KDP also.

Also I am pretty certain I have read of a few 1st Gen KDP failures as well.

I wish they had a recall or something to help us out.

I have heard the closer to the redesign of the timing cover, the more likely the dowel pin would work itself out. I don't know if that is true but it sounds good.

I used the KDP jig on my '94 (which was in my family sense bought it new) at 180k miles, 2 years ago, and the pin was no where in sight.

I bought a '97 2 months ago (145k miles) and just got the KDP jig to take care of it. I pulled the fan bracket off and found that I was too late. The KDP has already struck. I personally think the problem was there when I bought it, and that might be a reason for getting such a good deal on it, but who knows for sure.

My advise is DON'T WAIT TO GET IT DONE! (I'm yelling out of frustration, if you can't tell)

I JUST FIXED MY KDP FOR PIECE OF MIND, AND WHEN I GOT INTO IT IT WAS ABOUT 1/4 OUT. I CALLED A TECH AT CUMMINS AND HE SAID THAT ABOUT 10% OF THE 12 VALVE CTD HAS HAD FAILURE. HE TOLD ME IF I HAD THE TOOLS AND HALF A DAY THAT HE RECOMENDED THAT I GO AHEAD AND FIX IT, BECAUSE THE REPAIR COULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE IF IT CAME OUT. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DONT RECALL THIS IF THEY KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM.

Also I am pretty certain I have read of a few 1st Gen KDP failures as well

I can think of one that had a pin almost out last year at Peir's. Most of our guy's are having bolts come loose in the timing cover. The 1st gen crowd have lost two camshafts in the last year from camshaft retainer bolts falling into the gear train.

Case500D pulled the cover on his truck and found loose bolts a few months back. About 30 days later I pulled my cover and found loose bolts also. I hope just doing a outside KDP fix doesn't jump up and bite someone from loose bolts inside the covers. :(

Please do not use caps lock. It is thought of a shouting in public forums. Plus it makes it hard to read someones statement.

For those of you thinking about using a jig read Philp's post a couple more times. If a screw falls out the damage is worse than the KDP. Breaks cam shafts. I recently did a '97. Some of the screws were pretty loose. All of them have red loctite now and are torqued up right.

I also did the tst-kdp fix kit. Pin was half way out and some of the screws were very loose. Now red loctited and torqued. Glad I did the whole thing. Very glad I discovered TDR about a year ago.
