Being a new owner I can't offer much in the way of comparison. I love this truck, the looks the power, etc. etc. As you can see mine is one that would get the worst fuel mileage, but I have averaged 17 mpg. , that is not bad for a truck that weighs 7500 lbs. empty. Based on reading the thread, everyone has excellant reasons why a 12valve or 24valve would be "best". I think you can't go wrong keeping your 24valve, but you need to do what will make you "happy". Just one suggestion. You might want to wait until the 2003's come out, since you will then have a 3rd option. :)

12 or 24????????

Sounds like this is a choice you need to make by yourself,,Think of it this way,,Do you like the added security of being able to in the right situation turning off the HP with a switch or not,,24 valve hp technology is coming on and is getting better everyday,,First address the problems with the dealer then decide where you want to go as far as power and driveabitity,,If 12 valve is where you really want to be they why settle for anything less than a 98 5 spd truck,,Now if someone says the old"they are hard to find" email me,,I know where a 98 Quad 5 spd Black and Driftwood SLT with 60,000 miles is and the owner NEEDS to move it,,Just a thought... ... .

I was supposed to purchase a 98 12 valve this past weekend that I found sitting on a dealers lot,but the dealer screwed the deal up by getting the truck in a accident on the way to the gas station to fuel it up for me. This is what I am looking for:98 12v 4x4 SLT regular cab--auto or 5 speed doesn't matter--in the 50,000 mile range and not half way across the country from me(as a refrence,I'm not far from Milwaukee WI)

Not knockin' the 24 valve guys , but I had a 99' 5 speed, and I like my 96' auto alot better. Even before any mods, the seat of the pants feel was just more impressive (IMHO) although with the minor mods the 96' is definitly more impressive now. Not to mention, no big payment. :D
