To all TDR Memembers

Sure glad we have laid in an almost never ending supply of MILK. If Farm bill is not passed by the end of the year you could be paying as much as $2. 00 MORE PER GAL. My girlfreind that never complaines about living in the cold barn, me going out to play with her BIG BOOB!! with my cold hands sounds like she enjoys it because it souds at times with my ear flap hat on as if shes saying MOOOOORE MOOOORE. Gives up about 4 gal a day. SAD TO SAY BUT THAT AINT THE ONLY THING GOING UP IN PRICE IF IT DONT HAPPEN

And some say we're NUT'S FOR HAVING AN ALMOST SUSTAINABLE LIFE.

Big, possibly totally aside, but I could never understand why in my area, there seems to be two sets of milk prices. At the a plus Sunoco they have gallons for 2. 99 now 3. 19. At the wholesale clubs the same. But the major markets like stop n shop, path mark, shop rite etc its at least 1. 50 more.
I was told the cheap milk undercuts the same farmers. Now thanks to the chimp in charge, it's all gonna jump.

No idea Wayne this is one of OUR DOOMSDAY kind of things. First we like the idea of knowing where our and how our food is produced but self reliance has been our minds for a long time. What ever catastrophic thing occurs (if it indeed ever does) We dont want to have to rely on any outsiders or almost none at all. Wife has been working on the veggie part of it and seems to have gotten a grip on growing veggies in the MT winter she has tomato plants with blooms on them at its been at times -0 in the temps. I could ask the FIL why he's into that kind of market thing he and the Son are doing PRETTY DARN GOOD in the cattle that they raise.

Please leave your racist comments out of the discussion.

1. How have Dairy Farms been subsidized over the years? What event recently changed those subsidies?
2. How has weather, drought, and the price of cattle feed affected the price of milk?
3. Why have dairies been going out of business?
4. What are the roles of Congress and the President in changing milk prices and subsidies.
5. Which of these businesses you mention use Milk as a loss leader to get people into the stores and to buy gas, and other stuff?

Do tell.

Big Nasty,

Who introduced the Farm Bill? Who voted for it?

I work on dairy farms and from what I have seen about the fiscal cliff and farm bill scares me.

1. The farm billed is up for renewal and some people want to change what is in the farm bill. The price supports I know are for the milk price, when the price drops below $16. 94 per hundred, the program would pay the difference. There are alot of other things in the bill too and it comes down to controling the milk price. About 10 years ago the price was around $8-$9 for Grade A. That was not good and those who were not finacially sound didn't make it.
2. The drought has affected the feed prices in a substantial way. Everything has pretty much doubled. My boss sold a load of hay at the hay sale yesterday at $305 A TON! His load wasn't even the highest, the highest was $320. Add in grain prices, cost of seed, fertilizer, land prices, fuel and many other things alot of money is being spent on feeding cattle. This is one of many reasons why dairies have been going out of business, because you don't have enough of your own homegrown feed and can't afford to buy it at these prices. So you have to sell. If the farm bill does not pass, the rep from the plant where we ship says we could see $35 to $38 per hundred milk. I don't claim to know it all and in the big picture only know a little. But this is what I have observed from the farm side of equation. If anyone knows more please add because I would like to know too.

Must have hit a DEEP WOUND in Sea Gull Dump :-laf dont like looking at the bottom of the cliff that your choice has driven us to the brink of jumping AT LEAST FOR SOME :D

Some that I dont always agree with WARNED OF THIS!!! and some voted for the *** **** anyway.

Seems digging at wounds is SOP around here anyways. I don't think that's the cliff. There's no way to drive off from the other side (where we are now) getting OT. I can't believe the stalemate that's happening.

Well, when Big Nasty has no ideas, or concept of a subject that he himself brings up, what does he do? He resorts to personal attacks.

So Mister Big Nasty, what and who controls the price of Milk? Is is President Obama the one who introduces farm bills in Congress? Is it he who controls the price of milk? Is it he who controls weather? Is it he who controls grain production, and the price? Is it he who waves his hands and makes hay grow or not? Does he command that there be rain or not?

Further more, who pays for the farmers subsidies? The farmer? The American Taxpayer?

Of all the farmers who got subsidies what percentage are family farmers who actually farm vs corporate agriculture, vs land owners who have never farmed and who have never had any intention of farming, but who get paid not to farm?

Define Socialism and how it relates to farms, farming and farmers versus those who worked for thirty years, and paid into Social Security and Medicare, and will use it when they are too old or sick to work. Go on. Got any words of wisdom?

We are waiting.

FIL is standing here behind me laughing his butt off at how PO the other guy gets over THE COMMENT.

He has been working in the market and commodities market for many years and he thinks your assessment is spot on. I DONT KNOW I just rattle chains to get the crap off of them and SOME TAKE OFFENCE TO BEING SHAKEN OFF.

We have enough room in our hay barn for his herd and my little bit that we use isn't anything to an operation such as the one you work for. I lay in hay during the summer and fall when price is down and my guys can be good to go for the winter. Now as his and our Sons cattle enterprise grows they will be in the same dilemma as yours. They dont try for the big chain store market but more of a specialty Beef for restaurants. It is a shame the way of the family farm is coming to an end but that has been going on for a long time. There are some cattle people up here that are making a go of it but its real tough to compete with the big industry operations and still make enough to show a little something for your efforts.

Hope it all works out for ya CAUSE IM FOR THE FAMILY FARMS

And now for the turd in the punchbowl. I don't think we should subsidize any ag products! We should all pay what it costs to grow our food. You might remember about a dozen years ago, the Govt sponsored a dairy herd buyout, to alleviate an over supply of milk products. Several years later they were giving low interest loans and even grants to get farmers back into the dairy business. Farming is a business, and it should be treated as such. Washington wastes our money and the farmers are no better off for it. It has been said many times before, and it applies to to what's going on in Washington now, Men will meet behind closed doors. Cigars will be smoked, brandy will be poured, and the people on the other side of the doors will suffer.

That would be all and well if the playing field for the farmers were the same. Thus enters the BIG COMPANY farmers how fair is it when GIANT group's of investors buy up the majority of say the corn producing area land. They can take a hit in an area that it has little holdings in and then charge more in the area's that it has more holdings in and it all works out for them. Then you get to the family farm they are in just one place to work, some are very large but they still cant compete with the big corporate farms/ ranches what ever the commodity is. The family farms go under then and are bought up by Corporate Farmers, and they charge what they want, because they can!!!! go some place else. Gee I THINK that is what happened to Standard Oil!! Rockefeller had a monopoly on it the Government told him NO YOU CANT DO THAT. So he sold off to Gulf,Sunoco, and a bunch of others but the bottom line was that all the money from all the sold off companies CAME BACK TO THE PARENT OWNER well I dont have to tell ya how that worked out YOU SEE IT EVERY TIME YOU FILL YOUR TRUCK.

And why not subsidise the farmers and others the Railroad has been for millenniums and not to much is said about that!!! If it was all fair in a fair world it would be the LAND OF OZ but this ain't Kansas and the world ain't fair SO IT AINT GOING TO HAPPEN!!! GREEEEEEEED PLAIN AND SIMPLE

I kind of like the Barter System I needed a automatic trans for my Inter-trash-anol truck I stopped ONLY TO TALK TO A MAN THAT HAS ONE and he up and said pay me what you think its worth when you get it in and working WITH A HAND SHAKE. BIL got it in for a Christmas gift we stopped by to talk to the man that gave me the trans. I asked REALLY WHAT DO YOU WANT? His price was for me to take him his 2 son's and his wife and their equipment into the wilderness this fall to hunt pick them up and bring them back. DONE!!!! I needed the trans he needed a ride into the mountains that he couldn't do I could. That is fair what goes on in the REAL WORLD AINT REAL OR FAIR.

This is why I dont like EITHER SIDE OF THE POLITICAL GAME THEY ARE BOTH CHEATS AND WORK FOR THEIR POCKET not for the GOOD OF THE PEOPLE like they want everyone to believe. And another reason for self reliance and sustainable living.

THIS IS JUST A SIMPLE MINDED MAN WITH SIMPLE IDEAS OPINION

I get my milk from the local Amish family since the government wont let them sell it to their broker because they cant pasteurize the milk. However what really ticks me off is when I go to the store and found out my favorite potato chips have gone to 5. 29 a lb bag. I quit eating potato chips immediately! I also sent them a scathing letter, which they never replied to. Go figure, Moe

As bad as the hay season was this year, many farms are selling off their beef because they cant afford the feed. when it all comes to a head beef is going to be at a premium and we will all be eating veggies and washing it down with powdered milk. The only crop that the locals did ok on this year was the beans, everything else took quite the hit.

Ya better read the fine print, your 1# bag of chips is probably 12/13oz:-laf The food store containers keep shrinking and the price keeps going up. Other than a few items that i have to have, I wont buy it unless it is on sale, then stock up.

Air accounts for the other 3 oz, NIsaacs :D The big bags also make for a great pillow as blown up as they are
