Yup... waiting for some test results on our compatibility. She's a friend of the family who has PKD, which, because it's hereditary, noone in her family can donate, because they may develop the same problem later on.
Tough decision. God bless. There are a handful of friends and family I would do anything for. She is lucky to have you as a close friend, which you would have to be to consider this.
I haven't donated a kidney, but everything I've read says it causes no problems for anyone who started in good health. It's also supposed to be less painful than bone marrow donation. Please let us know if you test compatible.
I would too if I were compatible; just noting that marrow donation is supposed to be quite painful is all. Anyone who donates an organ gets admiration from me, esp. pre-posthumously (prehumously?).
Well, I got a call from the transplant center today. I'm "a better than average match"!!! I'm not a perfect match, but a better match than they usually ever get from anyone who's not a family member. This doesn't guarantee that I'll be the donor, but the Doc seemed to think that chances were very slim that a better candidate would be found.
Now I'm really trying hard to get myself healthier. It's easier to heal when you're healthy to begin with. I've lost over 25# since New Year's... having a reason like this sure makes it easier!
Keep updating this thread. I may be a canidate for a transplant in the fututre, and am interested in the details of what the doctors are telling you...
